About the Author
Paul Coldwell is an artist, curator and Professor of Fine Art at the University of the Arts, London. His own practice includes prints, book works, sculptures and installations and he has exhibited widely with solo shows at The Eagle Gallery, Freud Museum, Arthouse Dublin, The London Print Studio, and Queens Gallery, Delhi. He has published writings on a number of printmakers including, Morandi, Ardizzone and Rego, with whom he worked with on all her etchings between 1986- 2005 including the Nursery Rhymes, Peter Pan, Pendle Witches, and the Children’s Crusade.

The Right Book at the Right Time

With "Printmaking: A contemporary Perspective," Paul Coldwell has done a great service for teachers and students as well as artists connoisseurs and collectors. As a printmaking teacher for more than 35 years, I have been looking for a book that connects the history of printmaking with the latest contemporary practice. Coldwell's writing is on the mark. "Printmaking" is a clear-minded and articulate guide to current trends in the field. Coldwell traces the historical roots of contemporary trends such the role of printmaking in a global culture, and printmaking's expanded boundaries, both conceptual and technical. It is timely, comprehensive, and a very good read. A valuable book for all - artists, teachers, students and collectors alike.

Artist Paul Coldwell examines prints from all time periods and mediums. This book is extremely informative (chapters includes Painterly Approaches, the Hybrid Print, Political Imperatives, Expanded Print, etc) and has excellent color reproductions. I wish this had been required reading at art school.

just might change how you approach problems with JS

My name is on the back cover, and that blurb probably says it all but...

I had the privilege of reading some early drafts of this book and seeing it take shape. Fogus has written an outstanding book here and one that I could see joining the ranks of canonical JS texts like JavaScript: The Good Parts, Professional JavaScript for Web Developers, and JavaScript: The Definitive Guide (aka "el Rhino Diablo"). Just like Underscore is a surprisingly-small-yet-surprisingly-powerful library, so this book is surprisingly dense. This probably shouldn't be your first JavaScript book, but if you're familiar with the language already, then this is an excellent introduction to the functional programming paradigm, as well as how to apply those concepts to JavaScript. I'm particularly impressed with how accessible he makes some of these concepts (e.g., pipelining, trampolines, protocols) which can sometimes seem a bit... obtuse and academic. Fogus really shows how these powerful techniques can be used with great effect in JavaScript, but also how JavaScript itself makes some of these concepts possible (and even trivial) to implement.

Seriously: JavaScript is everywhere, it's the lingua franca of the web, and as we do more powerful things in the browser, we're going to need more powerful programming paradigms. "Functional JavaScript" helps show the way.

Learn Underscore first

In the foreword, the author makes an argument for why he finds Underscore so useful for writing functional JavaScript, then says "while I use Underscore extensively (and endorse it), this is not a book about Underscore, per se." This translates to "I'm going to use Underscore a lot in my code samples, but I'm not going to explain a bit of it."

But by the time you're 17 pages in, you're running into sample code like "return _.rest(.map(table, _.first)."

If you don't have a grounding in Underscore, you will hit a wall early on and have to choose between pausing to get a grounding in underscore or throwing the book away entirely.

Hopefully this review gives you the option of making that choice BEFORE buying the book.

"Functional Javascript" by Michael Fogus; O'Reilly Media

Disclaimer - I got this book through the O'Reilly blogger review program, however, I had planned on purchasing this book since I first heard of it, the fact I got it through the program was simply a bonus.

In his new book, Fogus attempts the twofold task of introducing his audience to functional programming in general, and demonstrating how one can achieve a functional style using Javascript and the underscore.js library in particular.

Reading this book was my first sustained investigation into functional programming proper. I had heard it mentioned in various contexts through the years, but as far as real reading into the topic, I doubt that I had done more than simply skimmed the functional programming wikipedia page.

I had, naively, expected to be faced with something entirely foreign when I initially opened the book. What I found, though, is probably best compared to the first time you listen to jazz music after years of listening to rock. All the parts are the same, the musicians use the same instruments, making the same sounds, but use them in ways that are both familiar but, in some sense, radically different at the same time.
In terms of example code provided, it will be comprehensible to anyone familiar with javascript, one might simply be struck by the _way_ things are done. They may seem unnatural at first, but once one starts to get a feeling for the functional style it becomes clear how functional programming makes it easier to reason clearly about your code, something that (it is obvious to me now) is much more difficult in the good old fashioned OOP or imperative programming paradigms.

I have no gripes about the book, I picked up a few minor typos - these are to be expected in a first printing, and have all seemed to already been reported. All in all I think it's a fantastic addition to the JS literature and should be read by any JS programmer who is serious about writing extensible, scalable code.

I see myself returning to this book again and again - I can think of no higher compliment for technical writing.

Why did I write My Toddler Talks? To help parents and professionals get their toddlers talking! When I first began treating toddlers who were delayed with their speech development, I struggled to find easy to understand, step-by-step guides for my parents to read. Collecting information from various resources was very cumbersome and trying -even then, I couldn't find practical and hands-on resources. So, I decided to write a workbook for my parents! My Toddler Talks is the culmination of several years of analysis of current research and work experience. I have completed all the play routines, performed all the techniques and strategies and continue to implement play routines and train current clients at my private practice Scanlon Speech Therapy, LLC.

About the Author
Kimberly is a New Jersey-licensed speech pathologist and�author of Learning to Read is a Ball.�She�is nationally certified by the American Speech and Hearing Association (ASHA). Kimberly is a creative thinker and a passionate therapist who believes that children should have fun in therapy. She has had the opportunity to hone her skills by working in various settings serving all ages, populations, and disorders. She is a three time recipient of ASHA's award for continuing education (ACE). Kimberly graduated from Rutgers University with a Bachelor of Science and earned her Master of Arts in Communication Disorders from Montclair State University.�
In addition to writing books and blog posts, Kimberly is busy running her private practice, Scanlon Speech Therapy. A life-long resident of Bergen County, NJ, Kimberly lives with her husband, their delightful daughter, and their very cute but mischievous chocolate Labrador Retriever, Barney.

Amazing book!

My 2 year old son is in speech therapy, and this book really coincides with the techniques we are learning from the speech therapist. This is great for me to continue working with my son in our home - the ideas in this book are excellent, with great specific instructions. The introduction is a must read - do not skip!

Highly recommended!

This book has been helpful to me as I teach young children who have speech and other developmental delays. This book will also be helpful to parents and professionals who work with children ages 0-3 years. The writer describes specific activities that will help toddlers develop language and communication. Each activity includes a list of materials that are needed as well as an outline of steps in order to carry out the activity. This is a very practical and hands-on book that will guide you to help your child or student develop in language and in other areas of development. The writer describes how to work with young children in a patient, sensitive, and loving way in order for each child to develop at their own pace. The writer combines a very strong understanding of child development with practical activities to help your child or students develop language in a fun way.
