She has recently made her debut as an author with VOCAL IMPROVISATION (Techniques in Jazz, R&B and Gospel Improvisation). Ms. Goodman shares all of the secrets she has learned from the industry greats in her new book. Her jazz CD's include the highly celebrated Verve releases TRAVELIN' LIGHT and UNTIL WE Love which featured Goodman with Kevin Eubanks, Christian McBride, Gary Bartz, Gary Thomas, Terri Lyne Carrington, David Bunn, Tony Bunn and many other jazz giants. Her third and most recent CD, ANGEL EYES features her in a smooth jazz setting with saxophonist Walter Beasley, vocalist, Armsted Christian and others. The sultry ballad SOMETIMES, which was written by the singer, is a favorite among smooth jazz lovers. Great for last 1/3

Reviewed this text for a possible course adoption. The jazz and blues section is lackluster, but the Gospel/R&B sections really do shine. There are some cool ideas in the essentials section: warmups, terms, theory. Nothing on the level of the M.W. books and the soot doot exercises are a disservice to vocal jazz improvisers. But the last two sections alone really are almost worth the price of admission for content covering melismas and particularly fully notated versions of the coinciding songs/exercises.

Definitely what I was looking for. I am mostly a self taught singer, I recently purchased a few books to upgrade my vocal techniques. This book is providing me what I am looking for to improve vocally. I do not sing Jazz or Blues, I have not listened to the 1st cd. CD# 2 provides numerous ad-libbing patterns, colorful melismas. From great gospel examples to R&B like Aretha, Mariah, Chaka, Stevie Wonder, I recommend this book to singers who enjoyed coloratura style.

From the start Eva is ambivalent about him, never sure if she really wanted a child, and he is balefully hostile toward her; only good-old-boy Franklin, hoping for the best, manages to overlook his son's faults as he grows older, a largely silent, cynical, often malevolent child. The later birth of a sister who is his opposite in every way, deeply affectionate and fragile, does nothing to help, and Eva always suspects his role in an accident that befalls little Celia. The narrative, which leads with quickening and horrifying inevitability to the moment when Kevin massacres seven of his schoolmates and a teacher at his upstate New York high school, is told as a series of letters from Eva to an apparently estranged Franklin, after Kevin has been put in a prison for juvenile offenders. This seems a gimmicky way to tell the story, but is in fact surprisingly effective in its picture of an affectionate couple who are poles apart, and enables Shriver to pull off a huge and crushing shock far into her tale. It's a harrowing, psychologically astute, sometimes even darkly humorous novel, with a clear-eyed, hard-won ending and a tough-minded sense of the difficult, often painful human enterprise.

What would you do if your child was a psychopath?

WARNING: SPOILERS AHEAD. DO NOT READ IF YOU DON'T LIKE SPOILERS

This is one of the few times I was glad I had watched the movie before I read the book. I was prepared for the horrors to come. I knew the mother, Eva, was not particularly likable, and did not want to have children. The only reason she chose to do so is that her husband, Franklin, wanted a child so badly, and she loved her husband desperately and wanted to please him. Eva was capable of love; the attachment disorder was not her fault. In the letters she addressed to her husband, she described numerous scenes where she searched for Franklin frantically at the airport after returning from her trips abroad because she missed him so badly. And she loved her second child, Celia, even though she clearly saw what she perceived as Celia’s character flaws, something many parents have difficulty doing.

So as to the question of nature versus nurture, I think we were given ample clues that the primary cause of Kevin’s problems was nature, although his nature made it extremely difficult for his mother to nurture him in any meaningful way. In answer to questions raised by other reviewers – yes, some children are born with brain defects that prevent them from experiencing normal human emotions. Read up on recent brain research. It will open your eyes.

Another aspect of the situation which was quite frustrating is Franklin’s sheer pig-headedness in refusing to see what Kevin truly is. As the author presents Kevin’s behavior, he has some aspects of sociopathy, which includes the ability to present a charming and attractive face to those he wishes to deceive. Franklin saw what he wants to see, and after years of defending Kevin, Franklin was entrenched in this world view. To backtrack would be to admit that he had been wrong since the beginning, a difficult thing for anyone to do. But to refuse to face facts after Celia’s injury – well, I can’t help wondering what Franklin was thinking about as he lay on the lawn bleeding out after Kevin shot him in the neck with an arrow.

I can understand Eva on an intellectual level, I cannot empathize with her. My husband and I both wanted a child. I had a good idea of what was involved with raising a child. I was eleven years old when my younger brother was born, so I ended up doing a lot of the child care because my mother worked long hours and my father was disabled. Eva was unprepared for the emotional and physical stress involved in caring for a child, but Kevin’s nature made her job a hundred – a thousand! – times harder than for most mothers. My conclusion quite early in the book, especially since I had seen the movie, was that the problem was at least 90-95% Kevin’s, 5-10% Eva’s. She was not the most likable person in the world, but she was capable of love when the person she loved was able to love her back. Whatever Kevin felt for his mother - and he did have feelings toward her - it wasn't love.

Since my own experience as a mother has been the complete opposite of Eva’s, I particularly did not understand the ending. She finally found a way to love her son? She planned for him to live with her after he got out of Sing Sing, whatever “walk[s] out the other side”? I have cut relatives out of my life for far less than what Kevin did: Incest. Pedophilia. Even disrespectful and hurtful behavior toward me. Of course, none of these acts involved my son, but I can say without a doubt that if I had put up with fifteen years of the kind of behavior Eva put up with from Kevin, and then he did what he did, I would get him the best legal representation I could afford but he would never, ever hear from me or see me again. Apparently Eva’s feelings of guilt and responsibility for Kevin’s behavior drove her to the masochistic extreme of regular visits to Kevin in prison, and planning to once again take responsibility for him when he was released. Better her than me.

As for the writing – I found particularly the first one-third to one-half of the book very slow going. Overly complex and turgid prose slowed me down considerably. I am not impressed when an author goes out of her way to sound “literary”. In particular, in a story told in epistolary fashion, words should flow naturally, like conversation. And as I got further into the book, it did flow a little better – or maybe I just got used to her style. In the last half of the book, the exposition was broken up with dialogue more frequently, which helped.

I rarely give books four stars. That means “would read again.” I have seen the movie twice. It is conceivable that at some future date I will read the book again. The copy I am reading now is from the library. I plan to buy a copy for my collection, so that I will have it when and if I decide to read it again.

We need to talk about Lionel Shriver's thesaurus. As another reviewer noted, this book reads like someone who writes with one window open on Microsoft Word and the other on Thesaurus.com. Phrases like "immediate rapacities" and "superficial peripatetics" and "lambent joy" seemed more designed to impress than to communicate. The fact that this epistolary-novel is supposed to come from one estranged spouse to the other seems wholly unimaginable. Is this how a bohemian character who writes budget-friendly travel guides for starving students would communicate with her husband? I doubt it.

My biggest complaint is that the book was over-written. (Example: Every day we spent apart, I would conjure that wide warm chest of yours, its pectoral hillocks firm and mounded from your daily 100 pushups, the clavicle valley into which I could nestle the crown of my head on those glorious mornings that I did not have to catch a plane.)

I also got bored with the newspaper-like summaries of every school shooting ever. I want insight into this family, not a superficial recounting of the same widely-known facts of every other school shooting.

Obviously, this was not my favorite book. I can see how it would prompt discussion and but absent a group debate, this book made up entirely of unlikeable characters is both tiresome and grim.

I want to say that I really did enjoy reading this book

First, I want to say that I really did enjoy reading this book. The prose is advanced and lengthy, but I enjoy books like that because they improve my vocabulary. I read this on my iPad and made a point of highlighting the words I did not know so I could reference them later--I learned quite a few. The first 25% of the book moves agonizingly slow, with most pages dedicated to intricate, deep thought processes and emotional trails of the the narrator. While that was difficult to make my way through, I grew to admire it, because it takes an incredibly talented writer to capture the nuances of our everyday thoughts and connect them to a larger picture. What I mean, is the author take the reader on a journey through the mind of Kevin's mother from before his conception to his current day in prison. The thoughts she had during his infancy tied together with thoughts and actions in his later years, and that I find incredible.

At first when i heard that she would be writing a book I was a bit sceptical. After reading the book I applaud Eleanor VonDuyke! Why...because I know that she is for real...Why? because I attended a pageant in Colorado Springs and SAW her hand over ALL of her pageant proceeds, ON STAGE, to the representative of the HEATHER DAWN CHURCH organization! Do we remember who HEATHER DAWN CHURCH was?? She was a 12 year old little girl that was missing, found later murdered! This money was used to help the search teams. How many other pageant directors out there have a REAL concern for children...not many...I know, because I have attended many pageants and all they are out for is for themselves! Sure, Eleanor has been downed for things she has done...put yourself in her position DEALING with stage mothers for twenty years..and the times this classy woman in sequins and rinestones looked up from her podium and saw her drunk husband at the door way...we all saw that too! There are so many people out there that she has helped .She has emptied out her cupboards for people she knew needed food for their children, she bought Christmas presents for children she knew weren't going to have a Christmas, when you see her hug a little girl or little boy you know its for REAL! I cannot believe she has sat back and taken the crap she has taken! She has never been given a chance to present her side til now...and my prayers are with her. Eleanor VonDuyke...keep that head high, that beautiful smile, and let the Peter Boyles of Colorado eat their heart out!!!! WE LOVE YOU!!!!

Courrageous Story Line On The Kiddie Pageant Scene!!

Finally someone has confessed! I've been
involved in kiddie beauty pageants for three

years. I saw everything mentioned in the book,

from mothers hiding contestant clothing, slapping, $4,000 Western Wear clothing, and

mothers going crazy when the kid didn't win...

and you know who gets the butte end of it...

usually the pageant director or the kid! It was

always the pageant director "fixed it" or the

kid did a "stupid" job on the stage! There are some good things to be seen too, but these long

time pageant "junkies" ruin it for us "rookie"

moms! I would love to see another book done

just on kiddie beauty pageants. This was good

but, there's more to be told. I can see how the

pageant end of it MAY have had something to do with the little girl being murdered. She got

so much attention, and her little brother just stood back and watched her get all the glory.

If you'll notice some of the photos where they

are together, he really isn't dressed like a normal little boy...he wore alot of red checkered jackets

something a girl would wear. I loved the last

chapter...It certainly made up my mind! The

Bouder police need to read this book!

Jonbenet and Pageant Director have alot in common

I never wanted to believe that Jonbenet possibly could have been murdered because of her participating in pageants. Now I'm not so sure. Duct taping, breast implants on 12 year olds, false hair pieces, sexy modeling, and flaunting the little girl all makes sence! Wouldn't that turn on a little boy? Especially if she was getting all the attention and him not? The pageant director and JonBenet have alot in common, the only difference is that one lived, the other didn't. I wonder if JonBenet ever told her mother. I feel this child has been sexually abused for a long time. I have always wanted to enter my little girl in a pageant, now I'm not so sure. If a little girl is pretty, why can't she just win in a simple little party dress? It sounds to me that you have to have the Ramsey money to participate in these so called events!

About the Author

Stefan Tilg is Professor of Latin at the University of Freiburg. Before that, he was the first director of the Ludwig Boltzmann Institute for Neo-Latin Studies in Innsbruck. His main publications are from the fields of Latin Jesuit drama and ancient fiction.

She has edited and translated several early modern Latin works, including Leon Battista Alberti's Momus, the accounts of Elizabeth I's visits to the University of Oxford, and John Milton's Prolusions.

Add Schaums for Problems and You Have A Dynamite Set

The purpose of this classic text is to clarify the newer State-space methods that eclipsed Frequency Domain methods before and during Apollo. At that time, State-space was purely about proofs, and only a handful of Engineers actually were using them for problem solving.

To be honest, the math of State Space, pioneered by Russians like Liapunov and Pontryagin during and after Sputnik is daunting, as it substituted ordinary and partial differential equations for transfer functions, the calculus of variations for Wiener-Hopf in optimization, and Liapunov for Bode and Nyquist in stability (although Bode is certainly still used).

Because of this, this wonderful classic text gratefully reprised by Dover is still one of the most intuitive explanations about the "practical" side of State-Space. If you're "experiencing" (read enduring) the typical Engineering career cut/sort series of systems and signals then state space courses, this book is a MUST along with the Schaum's problem/solution examples. This also is ideal for self study for folks who want to get a more intuitive and analogous approach to SS with the outstanding didactics and pedagogy of a bygone age where teachers were more concerned with us learners than strutting their mathematical prowess page after page.

There are some daunting equations (not problems and solutions), but well explained and illustrated, and numerous diagrams and graphs (especially input/output diagrams for transfer functions) are given so we "get" the underlying concepts. Today we'd call these alogrithms, data structures, UML and parse control schematics, but they work regardless of nomenclature!

For problems: Schaum's has an out of print 1970s problem guide that is outstanding, used for under $10 US, at: Schaum's Outline of Theory and Problems of State Space and Linear Systems (brown cover). The modern versions of these are included in their Signals and Systems problem books, such as: Schaum’s Outline of Signals and Systems, 3rd Edition (Schaum's Outline Series) (the link is the 3rd edition there also is a perfectly fine 2nd for less money at): Schaum's Outline of Signals and Systems, Second Edition (Schaum's Outline Series). Heck, even the oldies but goodies problem guides have problems that are still on exams today!

Highly recommended for any bright undergrad and especially EEs, MEs, math majors etc. about to "encounter" signals and systems! Also, as always with Dover, a $150 text for $20 US new-- keep these coming Dover! This is obviously not appropriate with the current state of the art in e-readers due to the slaughter of the LaTex, let alone the diagrams, but Dover makes up for that with it's "ebook pricing for a new printed book" strategy.

IMPORTANT! Like many Dovers, this has a "look inside" feature on Amazon. If you're unsure of the text's level compared to your own level of math (especially if you're a teacher or in AP HS), DO check out the look inside feature above. Confident publishers do this, and they'd also rather have you happy with your purchase. If the stuff is too advanced after you look, you can peruse a Schaums or less technical intro first, such as Albertos' very fine beginner and popular Control text: Feedback and Control for Everyone, which also is $20 US, despite being from Springer!

About the Author

Michael Tribe is a development economist whose principal overseas research, consultancy and teaching experience has been in sub-Saharan Africa, in Uganda and Ghana in particular, over four decades. He has been the Honorary Secretary of the UK and Ireland Development Studies Association since 2000.

Frederick Nixson is Emeritus Professor of Development Economics at the University of Manchester. His research interests span macroeconomic policy, aid, industrialisation strategies and experiences, privatisation, the Asian transitional economies and poverty.

Andy Sumner is a fellow of the Vulnerability and Poverty Research Team at the Institute of Development Studies. He is a cross-disciplinary economist with primary foci of interest in child poverty and wellbeing;�poverty indicators, concepts, methods, approaches; and�the politics of policy processes.
