Sight Reading for the Classical Guitar, Level I-III: Daily Sight Reading Material with Emphasis on Interpretation, Phrasing, Form, and More

This book for the classical guitar has been compiled to improve sight reading, an often neglected aspect of musicianship.
With the guitar, musical components (scales, chords, arpeggios, etc.) may often be played in various positions. While this is one of the reasons that the instrument produces such colorful and interesting timbres, it also contributes to the difficulties of sight reading. It is important to develop facility in reading, recognizing the notes, as well as the bar positions in which to play them, the fingerings, the rhythmic patterns, and any markings if interpretation (dynamics, phrasing, articulation, etc.).
This book provides an orderly and systematic approach to the study of sight reading, based upon standards for sight reading for the classical guitar found in respected schools around the world.

Benedict offers a thoughtful and articulate text that is useful for beginners and learned guitarists alike!
By Brad Maestas
I ordered this book in the hopes that it would be useful not only for my students but for myself as well and it really does deliver. This text, Level I-III, assumes that the student has at least a basic knowledge of music theory but not so much that it's useless for beginners. It starts out with simple diatonic exercises on the first string, a great departure point and a common starting point for many generations of guitarists.

Just as it states on the cover, Benedict emphasizes dynamics, interpretation, phrasing and form almost right from the start. This wide scope permeates the lessons and lends a lightness and freshness to the lessons that keeps the student wanting more. The pacing of the exercises is carefully constructed and there are no big jumps in difficulty, which is great. Equally useful is his addition of random rhythm patterns at the end of each level. With all the emphasis on tone production, dynamics and interpretation, students (and teachers) often neglect their rhythmic mastery and with Benedict's inclusion of these random rhythms and his even-handed approach, one is sure to learn something no matter their experience level!

There haven't been many books that have made my list of instructional essentials but this book and the second volume have proven to be indispensible to myself and to many of my students. The fact that this book just happens to make you a better sight-reader in the mean time is a testament to its transparency and usability. Highly recommended.

Sight Reading for the Classical Guitar: Level 1-3
By D. Johnston
While not exaxtly a classical guitar beginner, I nevertheless noticed that my rate of progress was not matching my hard work in diligently practicing. My teacher knew that I was working hard and one day when she noticed my frustration she told me to get Sight Reading for the "Classical Guitar: Level 1-3" and, same title, Level 4-5. I did and immediately discovered what I had not sensed or heard...or understood what my teacher had been gently telling me.

Quoting from the Foreword of this book, "...it is important to develop facility in reading, recognizing the notes, as well as the bar positions in which to play them, the fingerings, the rhythmic patterns, and any markings of interpretation (dynamics, phrasing, articulation, etc.)."
The beginning guitarist, and even those more advanced, must develop skill in these facits if real progress is to be made.

The excercizes are mostly one-line, easy to read--even melodic--compositions that you will know when you have played them correctly. I particularly like the brief, direct, no-preaching comments the author makes. The book provides a thrifty, interest-keeping tool that now occupies a significant part of my daily practice routines. And, my progress is getting back on schedule.

An Absolute Jewel of a Book!
By loveguitar
I teach classical guitar and one day one of my students came into my studio with this book (Levels 1 to 3). It didn't take but a few seconds for me to realize how perfect it was and I ordered one immediately. I've had the second book (Levels 4 & 5) and wrote a review a long time ago praising it, but never bothered to check out this book until recently.

It is perfect for those who are brand new to classical guitar notation or notation in general. The exercises are so well laid out. You would use this book as a supplement to your regular guitar studies, assuming you are learning musical notation. This book will not tell you where the notes are, but delves into the musicality aspect of reading the notation and playing it. Since you can "Look Inside!" you can get a good idea of how the exercises are laid out and how they progress from simple to more challenging. My youngest student using this book is 7 and my oldest is 68 and both are learning very valuable aspects of musical expression.

It looks deceivingly simple at first but it will quickly spotlight areas of musical weakness that need to be worked on. It hammers an area of music reading which is usually the hardest to grasp, and most frequently left out of method books and that is rhythm. Learning what the names of the notes are and where they are on the guitar is not that much of a challenge, but playing rhythmically precise is often the hardest aspect of playing music. It has several pages of pure rhythmic practice dispersed throughout the book (which I wish you could see but unfortunately can't), which are gold mines for rhythmic practice. As far as I'm concerned this entire book is a gold mine for excellent, practical knowledge for music reading and interpretation. The subsequent book, Levels 4 & 5 is also wonderful.

You will learn a lot if using this book by yourself, but if you use it in conjunction with a qualified teacher, you will get much more out of it.

Review
"Of all the biographers and writers on the Third Reich, Joachim Fest was not only good at his craft, but also had the good fortune to be invited to act, as her describes it, as 'interrogating editor' for the best selling autobiography of Albert Speer. What he has done is to create the literary equivalent of a fly-on-the-wall documentary."
The Spokesman

"These conversations will be indispensable for specialists in the history of the Third Reich and fascism."
Political Studies Review

"In its poignancy, this book gives remarkable insights into three men: Hitler, as a consummate manipulator of people; Speer, as not particularly bright but vainglorious, weak, unremarkable and very lonely; and, not least, Fest himself, who proves tenacious and resourceful. He has convinced me with a work of brilliant analysis: the best study of Speer I know."
Michael H. Kater, York University, Toronto

"These diary-type notes by Joachim Fest, bestselling historian of the Third Reich, of his extensive conversations with Albert Speer make truly absorbing reading."
V.R. Berghahn, Columbia University

From the Back Cover
Albert Speer remains the most mysterious character of the leadership of the Nazi regime. He was the chief architect of the Third Reich and Adolf Hitler’s confidant. Speer built the “Reichskanzlei” (official offices), discovered the “Lightdome” and was finally, in 1942, named as the minister for arms. But he characterised himself as apolitical, called Hitler’s hatred of Jews an anomaly, and the conspirators of the 20th July placed Speer’s name on their cabinet list.

Joachim Fest helped Albert Speer to draft his “memoirs” and the Spandau diaries. Between 1966 and 1981 they conducted numerous detailed conversations whose content (and at times exact wording) Joachim Fest recorded in writing after the event. The records captured in this manner are now published for the first time in this book and they provide a unique portrait of Albert Speer – of the man, his thinking and his role in the Nazi regime. They are an important contribution to understanding the psychology of the national socialist leadership and at the same time a significant document of history.

Useful Anecdotes
By James T. Wheeler
For most of his life, Albert Speer must have been desperately lonely and unhappy. This was especially demonstrated in 1966, after he was released from his 20-year sentence at Spandau prison. He was unable to enjoy the family reunion that was staged for him and was really sorry he'd left confinement. In prison, he had a structure to his life he seemed to crave. And almost endless projects with which to occupy his mind and body. On the outside, he was restless and had few friends. These included his longtime secretary and aide, Anne-Marie Kempf. Frau Kempf had an attachment to Speer but was not a fawning admirer. She told him what she thought and he appreciated her frankness. Anne-Marie was perhaps his biggest asset in defending himself at Nuremberg as she smuggled documents into Speer's lawyer in her underwear. All the while she disguised herself as a member of the press.

The biggest question about Albert Speer remains: "What did he know and when did he know it?" To his dying day, September 1, 1981, he claimed innocence in knowing about the atrocities committed by the Nazis mostly against the Jews of Europe. Despite these claims, the author shows documentation of his knowledge. This includes a reprinted copy of an order he signed to evict Jews from their homes in Berlin to make way for road construction. Many former occupants of these homes would be shipped east to the Nazi death camps. Berlin's road building was part of the plan to turn the city into Germania--"capital of the world," in Hitler's imagination. Speer thirsted for fame and power and Hitler provided them.

Germania was perhaps Speer's greatest dream and it was never fulfilled. Space is devoted to how it would have looked based on photos of models Speer had constructed. These and virtually everything else were destroyed by the war. Only a few dozen street lamps remain today in Berlin from all of Speer's grandiose plans.

Speer's rise to prominence in the Nazi regime was bolstered by the deaths of two of Hitler's favorites. Some see in this part of a Faustian bargain Speer might have done with the devil. First, was the architect Paul Ludwig Troost in 1934. Speer was appointed Troost's replacement by Hitler soon afterwards. The second was Dr. Fritz Todt who died in a strange plane crash in February, 1942. With much fanfare and formality, Hitler then appointed Speer as his armaments minister, replacing Todt.

A memorable achievement by Speer, the architect and artist, was his "Dome of Light" used at the Nuremberg rally 1937. Speer invented the dome concept himself and was widely hailed for the achievement. 150 antiaircraft searchlights were used to stage the effect which equally impressed Germans and foreign visitors.

During Speer's imprisonment, he also got help from his fellow architect, Rudolf Wolters. Wolters arranged for Speer's notes to be smuggled out of prison so they might be kept in some logical order. Wolters also set up a trust fund to take care of Speer's family and repeatedly raised money for the fund among their friends and acquaintances. Despite this effort on behalf of Speer, Wolters became unhappy with Speer's "disloyalty" toward Hitler and the humiliation he felt it caused to Germans everywhere. The two men became estranged and Wolters even went to Speer's enemies with incriminating evidence against him. This may have hastened Speer's death, as he became obsessed in refuting what Wolters had done and even hired a lawyer to sue Wolters. Mr. Fest seems to imply that Speer was in the wrong, or at least his memory had failed him. Especially damning were diaries kept by Wolters under Speer's supervision during the war. Speer ordered incriminating passages deleted but Wolters kept the originals intact. These were found later in official archives.

The noted British historian, Hugh Trevor-Roper, had planned to write a biography of Speer but then lost interest. He said he'd become too old and needed a quiet life. So he turned the project over to Joachim Fest. Trevor-Roper saw Speer as the most fascinating of the old Nazi inner circle, as he stood aloof from the others and displayed rare intelligence and a willingness to speak. Among the public, fascination with Speer may also come from the desperation some might feel in working for a corrupt organization where little or nothing can be done by a just-minded person.

Speer could not adequately explain why he went to see Hitler twice in his Berlin bunker during the final days. Speer had recently gone around Germany countermanding the Fuhrer's scorched earth orders so it was almost suicidal to do this. Speer may indeed have had a death wish and admitted to Fest that he had grave premonitions of what awaited him after the war. Speer used his old tricks with Hitler, showing him building plans and recalling their past discussions. Speer described how old and disheveled the Fuhrer looked and how he was repelled by Hitler's bad breath. Not at all the erect, strutting dictator of a few years earlier.

In April, 1981, Speer was rather open to Joachim Fest about an affair he was carrying on with a German expatriate woman living in England. Fest acknowledged how the experience seemed to make Speer happy and so did not voice his disapproval. Still, Fest said he had to sympathize with Speer's long-suffering wife Margarete who was still living in Heidelberg.

In spring, 1981, Speer got word that a ABC was making plans to film his memoirs, "Inside the Third Reich." It's sad he wasn't alive to edit or critique the miniseries, since he might have corrected some things that got into the final production. Faults notwithstanding, we await the appearance of "Inside the Third Reich" on DVD.

Another Judgement by Fest
By James Hellyer
In my opinion, this book wanders about desperately trying to reveal some hidden fact about Speer that heretofore has not been discovered. This lack of a cohesive approach reduces the book to a disparate collection of re-visited issues and allegations that any student of Speer history already knows. Like an old blood hound with his head too close to familiar tracks, Herr Fest spends much time sniffing around for some new shred of evidence that will support his long held beliefs that Speer is not telling the whole story as Fest believes it to be. Unfortunately for him either Speer out foxes him at every turn or more likely he is simply, after all these decades, actually telling the truth.
After conversations with Speer, Herr Fest offers post conversation comments that many times are simply conjecture. An example on page 86....."As a minister, he must have liked to veer around like that(hot-tempered)with his people",....is evidence that Fest is so consumed to deliver new information that he often blurs his subjective projections for fact. Unfortuately, this obsession prevents the book from pursuing other legitimate and interesting avenues of inquiry.
For instance, how did Speer deal with the machinations regarding the plans to build Germania or the many other massive pre-war building projects? What sort of statement did Speer think his Great Hall truly made to the layman of that period or to subsequent generations? How did he come by his organizational genius as displayed in the construction of the Reichskanzlei or what was it like for him to see the crowd's reaction the first night of the Cathedral of Light at the Zeppelinfeld Stadium? Given Speer's modest nature we will never know about this aspect of his psyche or what his answers may have coincidentally revealed.
On the other hand, is it possible that Herr Fest's re-hash of the known past could simply be a trick that allows the author to assemble another tome that offers more to his and the publisher's bottom line than to the enlightenment of the reader?

Gripping, thoughtful and thought-provoking
By transponder
This book is a stand-out in a crowded field of works about Nazis and the Nazi era. Fest's constant probes of Speer's history and character, his unwillingness to be satisfied with the first answer or an evasive answer, pay off immensely for those that, like him, are trying to reach an understanding. Speer, as a man and particularly as a Nazi, is a fascinating category-bender, and this book goes a long way toward showing why he is such a perplexing yet ultimately sympathetic sort of figure -- a man who could have done so much, and would have been so much better off, had he not been on the wrong side of the war. In short, he played his part in an evil regime but comes across as flawed and blinkered rather than evil himself. And yet he joined the Nazi party in 1931 and served within the SS. It is hard for someone that judges him severely or looks upon him with a generous heart -- either way -- to see how he 'adds up'.

Anyway, I cannot recommend this book highly enough. It is a pacy, easily digestible read, and yet I did not rush through it because I found myself imagining the scenes, thinking over the moral questions involved, and pondering Speer, his colleagues, and the difficulty of discovering what Speer really did and really thought about it. I was also very interested in the discussions between Fest and his colleague Siedler, who together tried to draw Speer out and get him to confront the nitty-gritty.

Absolutely fascinating.

Everywhere Present: Christianity in a One-Storey Universe, by Stephen Freeman

Have you ever referred to God as the Man upstairs ? Most Christians living in a secular society have unwittingly relegated God and all things spiritual to the second storey of the universe: a realm we cannot reach except through death. The effect of this is to banish God, along with the saints and angels, from our everyday lives. In Everywhere Present, popular blogger and podcaster Fr. Stephen Freeman makes a compelling case for becoming aware of God s living and active presence in every moment of our lives here and now. Learning to practice your Christian faith in a one-storey universe will change your life and make possible the living, intimate relationship with God you ve always dreamed of.

This book started me on the Orthodox Pathway
By Bill
I read this about four months ago and am still thinking about what it says. As a Protestant it is very enlightening as to our mindset, we are mostly empircal deconstructionists. We have an enlightenment world view and we can't stop deconstructioning. Its our history. We came out of Roman Catholic ( the Western Church was compltely pragmatic by then) and threw everything out but the Bible. Now some of us are throwing that out too. Its the natural course of events.

We tend to live emperically. By that I mean that the physical world that we interact with by our physical senses is primary at least and for some of us the only reality we ever experience this side of physical death. Beside the obivious cultural differences, in that important way Orthodoxy opens up a new world, at least it did for me. Do all of us think that way? Maybe not, but in my experience it is the majority report.

Thank you Father Freeman for reminding us that He is here with us and He is not silent. Best of all, even in our fallen state of sin we can still in some way experience His presence, we are after all, made in His image. 5 Stars

Change your way of thinking on where God dwells
By Stuart Dunn
Fr. Freeman is a blogger, like me, and a podcaster. His blog and podcast series share the same name, "Glory to God," and from my knowledge of listening and transcribing a few of his podcasts for Ancient Faith Radio, they share the same content as well. You should give one or both a chance. They do not disappoint in timely content as it relates to Orthodoxy and the current culture.

"Everywhere Present" is a short book, which discusses how our secular society has relegated God to a separate realm of His own. The book compares our view of the world to a house with two stories. On the "first story" is where man lives. God used to live on the first floor with us, but man has banished Him to the upstairs. Now, we ignore Him because we see Him as inaccessible, or, even worse, we question His existence altogether. Sadly, these viewpoints don't just belong to non-Christians but "Christians" as well.

There are several good sections in this book, including one on icons. I have a great love for iconography, so Fr. Freeman's explanations of the place and importance of icons in our world spoke to me. Icons truly do with pictures what the Bible does with words. However, the best section came at the end when Fr. Freeman gave seven suggestions on how to "overcome the false sense of distance of God." The most important of the seven is simply giving thanks to God for everything. This isn't easy as there are lots of bad things that happen to us and others, but we must still be thankful to God for everything.

This book definitely does not disappoint. It challenged my view of the world and God in the world. Even though, I believe in God, I fear I can be guilty of not recognizing God's ever-presence in all things. The book was an easy and quick read, but anytime I think that, I believe that I need to re-read the book slower and try to glean more from it. If I had one gripe to make, it would be that you feel that Fr. Freeman repeats himself a bit in his writing. For that reason, I am giving this book 4 stars. However, I would still recommend buying it, reading it, and reading it again.

There are multiple stories here (pun intended)
By veteran tyro
This is one of my favorite books of recent years. I have purchased and given away a number of copies to people I think would appreciate it. It fits, for me, with C.S. Lewis' "Abolition of Man" (although much easier to read) and other books describing how our contemporary world has lost its sense of personhood in relationship and replaced it with individuality and narcissism. (It is very interesting to read this book side-by-side with "The Screwtape Letters").

This book can be read at an intellectual level, considering the insights into our culture's contemporary worldview, and what it has cost us. On that level, it points out clearly where breaks have occured, and what they look like. This is how I read the book the first time, getting the major points, not always understanding the details. I did find it quite enlightening to read how popular Christianity is, in many ways, functionally athiestic. It helped me understand how Christians can believe in Christ and still behave the way we do sometimes.

Having heard Fr. Stephen's podcasts on Ancient Faith Radio, I knew there had to be more to his book, so I read it a second time. This time I began to start thinking about what my life would be like if I really believed and acted like the universe had one storey - if God really WAS everywhere present. What would it be like if what we call miracles are an everyday occurance? What if I saw God everywhere? What if I really acted like God could be seen in the faces of the people around me? What would my life be like? How would I behave? A new storey opened up in the book, so to speak. The monks of Mar Saba live in a world most of us can't see - I suspect a world much more fully real than ours. What would I have to change to be more fully real (more fully present?) myself?

Here is where the book really becomes powerful. The seemingly redundant or obscure points need to be explored. They need to be chewed on. They need to be wrestled with. Most of all, they need to be taken seriously. This book can challenge your assumptions about reality. It can change your life. I have a friend who says, "watch out for short books, they'll get you." This is one of those books.

Disclaimer: I am an Orthodox Christian. This book is written by an Orthodox priest and is written from that perspective. Sometimes it may seem alien. It might be.

The Last Innocents: The Collision of the Turbulent Sixties and the Los Angeles Dodgers, by Michael Leahy

From an award-winning journalist comes the riveting odyssey of seven Los Angeles Dodgers in the 1960s—a chronicle of a team, a game, and a nation in transition during one of the most exciting and unsettled decades in history.

Legendary Dodgers Maury Wills, Sandy Koufax, Wes Parker, Jeff Torborg, Dick Tracewski, Lou Johnson and Tommy Davis encapsulated 1960s America: white and black, Jewish and Christian, wealthy and working class, pro-Vietnam and anti-war, golden boy and seasoned veteran. The Last Innocents is a thoughtful, technicolor portrait of these seven players—friends, mentors, confidants, rivals, and allies—and their storied team that offers an intriguing look at a sport and a nation in transition. Bringing into focus the high drama of their World Series appearances from 1962 to 1972 and their pivotal games, Michael Leahy explores these men’s interpersonal relationships and illuminates the triumphs, agonies, and challenges each faced individually.

Leahy places these men’s lives within the political and social maelstrom that was the era when the conformity of the 1950s gave way to demands for equality and rights. Increasingly frustrated over a lack of real bargaining power and an iron-fisted management who occasionally meddled in their personal affairs, many players shared an uneasy relationship with the team’s front office. This contention mirrored the discord and uncertainty generated by myriad changes rocking the nation: the civil rights movement, political assassinations, and growing hostility to the escalation of the Vietnam War. While the nation around them changed, these players each experienced a personal and professional metamorphosis that would alter public perceptions and their own.

Comprehensive and artfully crafted, The Last Innocents is an evocative and riveting portrait of a pivotal era in baseball and modern America.

Baseball in the southern California sun, Maury Wills stealing, Vin Scully narrating, life spinning and sweeping like a Koufax curveball toward the future—the tableau could not be richer for a writer as evocative as Michael Leahy.” (David Maraniss, author of Clemente: The Passion and Grace of Basball's Last Hero)

“Brilliantly reported and undeniably powerful... I can’t count the times reading this book I stopped, looked up, and said ‘Holy shit,’ and long before reaching the halfway mark I was slowing down to savor every word… I can’t recommend this book enough...The Last Innocents is an incredible read.” (Jeff Polman, CrookedScoreboard.com)

“[A] gripping narrative... By using their personal experiences to tell the story of an oft-recounted era of American history, Leahy’s book packs an unanticipated jolt of humanness.” (Publishers Weekly)

From the Back Cover

It’s rare for a team to encapsulate an era as indelibly as the Los Angeles Dodgers did the 1960s. White, black, Jewish, Christian, wealthy, working class, conservative, liberal—the Dodgers embodied the disparate cultural forces at play in an America riven by race and war.

In The Last Innocents, Michael Leahy tells the story of this mesmerizing time and extraordinary team through seven players—Maury Wills, Sandy Koufax, Wes Parker, Jeff Torborg, Tommy Davis, Dick Tracewski, and Lou Johnson—taking readers through the high drama of their World Series appearances, pivotal triumphs, and individual setbacks while the Dodgers reigned and baseball was king.

It is a story about what it was like to be a major leaguer when the country was turned upside down by the tumult of the civil rights movement, a series of wrenching political assassinations, and the shock waves of the Vietnam War. Outside the public eye, these seven Dodgers—friends, mentors, and confidants—struggled to understand their place in society and in a sport controlled by owners whose wishes were fiat. Even as they starred in games watched by millions, they coped with anxieties and indignities their fans knew nothing about—some of their wounds deeply personal, others more common to the times, though no less painful. In their dissatisfaction, they helped plant the seeds of a rebellion that would change their sport.

Revelatory, artfully crafted, and sweeping in its scope, The Last Innocents is a unique portrait of a watershed era in baseball and in America.

Advance Praise for The Last Innocents

“In an excavation as deep and as probing as his splendid book on Michael Jordan, the prodigiously talented Michael Leahy sheds a revealing light on what now seems like an ancient era in baseball, when white Cy Young winners such as Sandy Koufax were looked upon by owners as hired help and black MVPs such as Maury Wills were treated even worse. And along the way, he answers the eternal question: ‘Who moved Burright?’ Who is Burright? Well, you’ll just have to pick up this absorbing book and see.”—Mark Kram Jr., author of the PEN Literary Award–winning Like Any Normal Day

SHAQ GOLDSTEIN SAYS: 1960’S DODGERS… UNDER THE MICROSCOPE.. ON…& … OFF THE FIELD. A GROWN UP KID OF THE 60’S DREAM COME TRUE
By Rick Shaq Goldstein
As a child born in New York to a family that lived and died with the Brooklyn Dodgers… “Dem Bums” were my life… and lo and behold when the Dodgers moved to Los Angeles after the 1957 season… my family moved right along with them. So the time period covered in this amazing… detailed… no holds barred… story of the 1960’s era Los Angeles Dodgers… is now being read and reviewed by a Grandfather… who as a kid… not only went to at least one-hundred games at the L.A. Coliseum and Dodger Stadium… during this time frame… but I watched games on TV… never went anywhere without my transistor radio listening religiously to Vince Scully…and I ran and got the Los Angeles Times from the corner liquor store every morning for the sports section… and my Dad brought home the Herald Examiner every night from his job in downtown L.A…. and the sports section went directly to me upon his entry into our house. (Note: these are the two newspapers most frequently quoted in this book.) I still have in my possession my handmade notebooks with reams of 3-hole-punched notebook papers with yellowing scotch tape holding on to pages of the actual headlines and articles that are recounted in this wondrous work of art by author Michael Leahy.

This book is akin to a gift floating down from heaven for a lifelong Dodger fan from this era. It is so well written… that I literally couldn’t stop reading it. If they filmed a movie of my reading this book… they would show tears of joy… as flashbacks took me from my Grandfatherly couch… magically back to the most wondrous days of my youth. Going from my Little League and Babe Ruth games to the Coliseum and Dodger Stadium to see my heroes up close and personal in action. And please make no mistake… the author… truly brings those dreamy days… back… in exquisite detail. What is also added… are many… many details… from the locker room… from the players private lives… the kind of things that could never… and were never… reported back in the days of black and white TV… and no 24/7 multi-media reporting. So as much as I still… to this day… remember every play… every statistic… every competitive team… I was overjoyed… to be able to start fitting missing pieces together… in Dodger personal relationships… and just as importantly… what really… really made an individual Dodger become the man… AND… player they became.

And much of this heretofore unknown detail is heartwarming… but some… in perhaps… the most surprising and sad… of the seven main ballplayers depicted/dissected… is Wes Parker… who… along with Gil Hodges… are probably… the two greatest fielding first baseman in all of Dodger history… and from a child/teenager’s (me) point of view… was movie star handsome… smooth as silk out in the field… and known to have come from an extremely privileged background. Until this utterly illuminating book… I never thought I would be sitting here feeling so sorry… and demoralized… when finding out the truth of Wes’s loveless… abusive upbringing! The other six 60’s Dodgers spotlighted are Maury Wills… Sandy Koufax… Tommy Davis…. Jeff Torborg… Dick Tracewski… and Lou Johnson. (Oh… do I remember “Sweet Lou” lighting up the Dodgers with his play and his smile!) Dodger fans… and old school baseball fans… don’t for a minute think the book is only about them. Everyone is there… the mean… lovable… Big D… the cold stoic Walt Alston… Walter O’Malley… the not as loving and charming to the Dodger Family as the media led you to believe… and perhaps one of the great villains of the book… the devious… lying… underhanded… demoralizing… general manager… Buzzie Bavasi. In fact after reading page after page on how awful Bavasi and O’Malley treated players… despite having the Pot Of Gold known as Dodger Stadium… bringing in two-and-a-half-to-three-million-fans-a-year… I… for the first time don’t hate free agency and its riches quite as much.

If the game itself… and the locker room… and family background … dissection isn’t enough… Leahy… expertly… and almost seamlessly… merges all the world’s current events… everything from the Cuban Missile Crisis… the Kennedy assassination… Viet Nam… race relations… and more… right into the daily mix of Dodger historical life.

I feel like I could literally write a book about this book… but to share one story that I think will give potential readers an idea… of the near poetic trance an old-school baseball fan will be put into… many times over… by the author… let me set it up for you. The greatest one-two pitching punch in my lifetime… was Sandy Koufax and Don “Big D” Drysdale… in their prime… back to back. After a spring training game Sandy and “Big D” had a beer with Henry Aaron… Eddie Mathews… and Rico Carty. After a few friendly and amusing stories were shared… and there were laughs and grins all around… the following transpired:

“AFTER DRYSDALE TOLD A FUNNY STORY OF HIS OWN, THE INFORMAL GATHERING BROKE UP. THE SMILING BRAVES HAD BEGUN HEADING BACK TO THEIR CLUBHOUSE WHEN DRYSDALE INTERRUPTED, THINKING A LAST POINT NEEDED TO BE MADE. HE LOOKED AT AARON AND THE OTHER RIVALS AND SAID, “YOU KNOW, JUST BECAUSE WE’RE ALL HAVING THIS FUN TIME, DON’T THINK I’M NOT GONNA KNOCK YOU ON YOUR “BUTT” WHEN YOU COME UP TO HIT.”
“THE BRAVES LOOKED AT HIM, PERHAPS WAITING FOR A LAUGH. ONLY DRYSDALE WASN’T LAUGHING. HE SPUN AROUND AND LEFT WITHOUT ANOTHER WORD, LEAVING THE BRAVES TO REALIZE THAT NOTHING ABOUT DRYSDALE THE COMPETITOR HAD CHANGED: HE WOULD LIKELY THROW AT OR NEAR THEM SOON. IN THAT INSTANT, (THEY) UNDERSTOOD THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN THE DODGERS’ TWO PITCHING STARS, EACH OF WHOM (THEY) ADMIRED. “DON DIDN’T WANT ANYONE EVER TO HAVE AN ADVANTAGE OVER HIM, DON WAS THE BLOOD AND GUTS OF OUR TEAM. DON STRUCK FEAR INTO PEOPLE ON A FIELD. SANDY DIDN’T HAVE TO DO ANY OF THAT. PEOPLE KNEW THEY COULDN’T HIT HIM, BUT NOBODY FEARED GETTING HURT BY HIM. OPPONENTS WERE JUST IN AWE OF HIM.”

Additionally a very short anecdote… among many… that highlighted the “sign-of-the-times”… was the “clubhouse” friendship that developed between Maury Wills and Sandy Koufax. They took to opening the others fan mail… in an effort to shield the other… from the pain… and the fear… that may be lurking within. Sandy would try to root out any racist tirades or threats from Maury’s letters… and Maury… tried to weed out any severe anti-Semitic threats or rants.

I not only recommend this book highly… but I also want to thank the author for the time and effort to create such a masterpiece that has brought me… such enjoyment… fueled with nostalgia… and deeper insights than I thought were still available.

A great read, with one caveat
By Dave Cunningham
This was a must-read because author Michael Leahy and I were forged in the same approximate crucible. We're the same age, both grew up in Los Angeles as Dodger fans in the Koufax Era and were affected deeply in our teen years by the Turbulent Sixties. Also, we both made our careers in journalism. I suspect our paths diverged with the emergence of New Journalism in the hands of Truman Capote, Tom Wolfe and the like. And therein lies my sole criticism of Leahy's "The Last Innocents."

I was blown away by Capote's "In Cold Bood," wondering how he could get inside the heads of the two killers and write non-fiction as if it were a compelling novel. Ultimately, I came to reject New Journalism because it rang false. The authors of this trend throw us an enormous amount of personal detail, insights, thoughts, perspectives and moods that can't possibly be fact-checked or perhaps even sourced. In other words, it reads like fiction because to some degree, it IS fiction.

And this is what Michael Leahy has written. He was 10 years old in 1963, yet he tells us unequivocally what Maury Wills, Sandy Koufax, Wes Parker, Don Drysdale and many others were thinking and feeling at that time. Yes, Leahy spent time talking with Wills and some of the others, but that was half a century later. Memories stray. Wills had been through drug and alcohol addictions. Drysdale was dead. Koufax refused to talk about himself.

Leahy has compiled an impressive mass of sources at the end of the book. He relied on a lot of old published stories to document his facts, but Leahy concedes those "facts" sometimes are fiction (e.g., the Bob Hunter newspaper article that claimed Koufax would quit unless he got a $90,000 salary). So Leahy has sifted through an enormous amount of information, chosen to use that which works best for his narrative, and produced a very rich and readable book in the New Journalism style.

It does indeed read like a novel, and it's a page-turner. I couldn't put it down. It's a monumental work, and a great insiders-look at the mini-dynasty of the Los Angeles Dodgers in the Sixties.

I became a baseball writer, covered the Dodgers and got to know or talk with many of the characters in this book, including Koufax, Wills, Bavasi, Scully, Drysdale, Sutton, Hunter and more. Major League Baseball was my beat and career for more than 20 years. So I know that much of what Leahy writes is true.

I highly recommend "The Last Innocents" to anyone who was a fan of those old Dodger teams and stars. It will take you inside the stadium, inside the clubhouse, and inside the minds. I also recommend you read it with the knowledge that these words -- perhaps like any history or memoir -- are merely the best and most readable truths that the author could determine.

A great slice of Americana for all readers...
By Writer/Teacher
“We were champions, but we were kind of nobodies to ourselves,” Maury Wills, Los Angeles Dodger player sums up his feelings in The Last Innocents. Even if you’re not a top-of-the-line baseball fan, as I am not, this book marries Americana baseball with culture of the late 1950’s to 1960’s in a page turner of bittersweet memories.

“During the 1950’s, it didn’t matter where you lived, baseball and the Dodgers reached everywhere,” author Michael Leahy writes. As a former feature writer for The Washington Post, Leahy has done a tremendous amount research here and conducted crucial interviews with the Dodger players from this era, as surely this book will find it’s place on the history shelf of culture.

The book begins with the relevancy of baseball in mid-century American life and continues finding it’s spot in history among other iconic events as the Cuban missile crisis, the assignation of Kennedy and many pop-culture events such as Mohammed Ali meeting the Beatles.

Baseball was not immune to the same tough issues the country faced in the 1960s, and still must face: segregation, integration and the issue of race. As a southerner, I was intrigued to read of the segregation accounts by major and minor league players - - separate training facilities, separate hotels, racial insults - - Some of the same issues I remember happening in the Mississippi of my youth. Discrimination was everywhere. And that’s still important to remember.

From Dodger to Yankee player backstories, it reads and unfolds like a good mystery with superstar athletes as main characters affected by the events surrounding their time. Especially important are the stories of athletic success despite huge obstacles these guys experienced: players with second jobs to supplement their baseball salaries, labor disagreements, contract downfalls, the “reserve” players just hoping for opportunity . . . All too often the admiration we give to extreme athleticism omits the determination and grit factor that must be tried in a court of disappointment.

You don’t have to be a baseball fanatic to enjoy this book. It’s a sweet read. And it’s an important slice of Americana for everyone.

A great reference source!
By Amazon Customer
I've owned John Kelly's book now for the past year, along with a dozen other glamour photography books. I find myself constantly referring back to John's book for useful ideas on posing, lighting and other practical tips. His book successfully addresses glamour photography from the photographer's point of view. He stays away from photographic recipes and instead focuses on sharing the skills to allow the creative mind to develop their own styles and recipes. The photography within is top notch and the models are all gorgeous - no second string here. The book is broken into three main sections: the model, outdoor locations, and indoor locations. My favorite section is his in-depth coverage of the model, body types, basic makeup, and how to work with models on a professional level. I found that his outdoor location section to be excellent as well, but the indoor studio is a bit dated - as to be expected considering the date of publishing. Still, though this book is now sixteen years old, it is one of the best on the market.

Pretty Badass
By Tony Hall
My main fascination with photography recently has been lighting, so before reading this book I decided to read "Lighting for Glamour Photography". I almost wish I had read this one first since it covers glamour lighting in great detail, plus a whole lot of other stuff.
I just finished reading it today, so it's still sinking in, but if you plan on taking beautiful pictures of women and taking it seriously, you pretty much have to read this book. It's a career's worth of experience in an easy to read book.
I've got to say though that some of the 80's style pictures are pretty laughable, especially the 80's sunglasses! Ironically, the author mentions how ludicrous things like sunglasses look when they go out of style!

An Entertaining Tale
By Regina Pounds
A sea captain, horribly scarred, and a beautiful damsel in distress, who is blind to his flaws, are destined to fall in love with one another. Together, they uncover the dastardly plot behind her brother's disappearance. Cast a wicked, depraved villain and his greedy, lusty female accomplice into the fray, and you have 'Blind Aphrodite' -- an entertaining tale. Some violence and graphic descriptions of the beautiful as of the ugly side of the act called 'love-making' make for adult reading. Certain plot twists give this historical romance a gothic touch. Ms Bernard shows, rather than tells. A fine debut for a talented writer.

A Keeper!
By Jeannine Meador
This story was so special with a heroine who was like no other...she was real...not defined by her disability and allowed it not to control anything in her life. The story was fast paced and a book for staying up all night with! I loved it but was sad to come to the final page. We need more of this caliber of writing! This author goes to the top of my must read list and her books will remain in my library for re-reading!!
