The best UNIX book I have read so far!

This book was the main text for a UNIX shell programming course I took in my undergraduate studies. Out of all the UNIX/GNU Linux books that I have read this is the only one that I would recommend to anyone who is new to UNIX like operating system and desires to go further than the basics. The organization of the presented concepts is logical and easy to follow for beginning users. The exercises are well paced and cover the subject matter contained in the chapters quite well. The system programming portions of the text are a great primer for those who wish to continue past the "power user" level that the first half of the book gets you to.

I also like that the author points out the differences between GNU Linux and Unix, the features specified in the POSIX standard, and specific distinctive features of the various shells offered in *nix systems. Overall, I feel this book is the best UNIX/GNU Linux book currently available (as both a learning guide and reference) and would highly recommend it to anyone new to these systems. There is another review here that gives the lack of illustrations as a drawback, but I disagree as all of the example code is well presented and there is no real need for any sort of illustration beyond that.

Excellent guide to UNIX/LINUX

Excellent production quality (paper, printing, etc.). Lays flat, feels great in the hand, easy to read.
Content is clear and thorough.
You can tell it has been through multiple reviews, as the grammar, etc. are in great shape.
The only downside is the cost. I don't know why something gets termed a "textbook" and then has to cost triple digits.
I'll be keeping this one, even after class is over, so I can refer back to it.

This book is very well written and will be easily understood by beginners (or existing users). It starts at the beginning (the shell) and incrementally adds more to ones knowledge of a Unix/Linux system. For those who may not know, starting at the shell and knowing which shell is used is important. Some commands work in certain shells but not others. The word "Guide" in the title is accurate. The author tells the reader enough about the topic without overloading them with theory. Each chapter has an end of chapter review and exercises to test the readers knowledge. With this book, knowledge of which shell you use, and a Linux or Unix system, one can become a knowledgeable and proficient Unix/Linux programmer/user.

I do not see how one who is interested in learning Unix/Linux can go wrong by purchasing this book. Well done Mr. Das!

About the Author

A.J. Veal is Adjunct Professor in the Business School at the University of Technology, Sydney and previously worked in the University of Birmingham and the then Polytechnic of North London. He is past president of the (UK) Leisure Studies Association and of the Australian and New Zealand Association for Leisure Studies and well known for his writing in the fields of leisure, sport and tourism, including co-authorship of The Olympic Games: A Social Science Perspective.

Simon Darcy is Professor of Events, Sport and Tourism in the Business School, University of Technology, Sydney. He is a mixed-methods and interdisciplinary researcher with interests in sport event legacies, sport tourism, inclusive organisational practices, disability sport and volunteer management. He has published in Sport Management Review, Journal of Sport Management, European Sports Management Quarterly, Event Management and Disability & Society, is co-author of Benchmark Games: The Sydney 2000 Paralympic Games, and has produced sport research reports commissioned by government, commercial and not-for-profit organisations.

A fluffy white cat wanders between the homes of the two boys, relishing the scraps each feeds her. Then weeks pass without any sign of the cat, alarming each boy. Looking skinny and dirty, the cat at last visits Avi, who then follows her to Hamudi's neighborhood, where the youngsters begin to argue, each claiming the cat is his. As a rare snowfall begins, the boys stop bickering and, fearing that the beloved animal will freeze, follow her through Jerusalem to a dark alley where they discover four kittens in a box. As the mother purrs loudly and rubs against the boys, they conclude, "She does not want us to fight.... She wants peace." The watercolor art by this husband-and-wife team (Mei-Mei Loves the Morning) balances precise, close-up portraits of the boys with softly focused backgrounds that depict the various cultural nuances of the setting. A glossary defines the Hebrew and Arabic words integrated into the text. Ages 6-10.

K-Gr 3-As the problems in the Middle East continue to rage, this didactic story of finding common ground and a way to make peace seems both simplistic and apropos. Both Avi, who lives in the Jewish Quarter of Jerusalem, and Hamudi, from the Muslim Quarter, love the white stray cat they feed. After she disappears and reappears, Avi follows the feline and discovers Hamudi feeding her. As they argue about ownership, snow begins to fall, and she runs away. Predictably, when they find her, she has four new kittens, which they argue over and finally agree to share, each taking two of them home. The narrative flows smoothly, and da Costa's language makes the story seem more a legend or folktale than a modern tale. The watercolor-and-pencil illustrations are done in a realistic style that suits the narrative, but the boys look alike except for their different jackets and the fact that Avi wears a yarmulke. The endpapers, which depict the old city with the Wailing Wall and the Dome of the Rock practically touching, are quite effective. School libraries may want to consider this serviceable title for opening discussions about the Middle East.

Ages 5-8. Although this story is set in contemporary Jerusalem, a holy place to Muslims, Jews, and Christians, it is more about politics than faith. On its simplest level, it's the story of two boys, one Jewish, one Muslim, who squabble over a stray cat to which they've both become attached. Their argument heats up when they discover the cat has had kittens. Eventually their anger gives way to reason: each boy takes two babies, and mother cat is left free to roam between the neighborhoods to care for the kits, now safely off the street. Older children with some knowledge of Middle East politics, either from listening to the news or talking about the discord in secular or religious schools, will catch the deeper meaning. The idea that deeply rooted conflicts can as easily be resolved is unquestionably simplistic, but the book's optimism is appealing. The realistically executed watercolor art catches the strong emotional content of the argument and conveys enough detail in dress and setting to establish the boys' cultural background while still making them part of the modern world. An uplifting, very highly recommended children's story

Snow In Jerusalem is a thought-provoking children's picturebook written by Deborah da Costa about two young boys who live in Jerusalem's Old City - Avi in the Jewish Quarter and Hamudi in the Muslim Quarter. Though neither boy knows it, both of them are caring for the same, beautiful white stray cat. One day the boys follow the cat across the boundaries between the city's quarters, and something wonderful happens, as unexpected as a snowfall in Jerusalem. The muted, softly blurring yet endearingly memorable color illustrations by Cornelius Van Wright and Ying-Hwa Hu bring to life this gentle parable. Snow In Jerusalem is an uplifting, very highly recommended children's story with a core message of hope and love.

I think Snow in Jerusalem is a heart warming story. It brings two young boys together who are from differnt religions, one Jewish and one Muslim. The story includes colorful illustrations that represent the old city of Jerusalem and its different sections. Another aspect of this story that I like is the glossary. Throughout the story both boys speak a few words in Arabic and Hebrew. The glossary offers definitions and a pronunciation guide.

A story for now more than ever.

At it's heart, this book is about two children who find a cat, fight over it, and learn to share. But the backdrop of Jerusalem and the conflict between Jews and Palestinians makes it a very special read.
The illustrations are wonderful, and the words exceptional.

Conversational and Humorous

Lang's "On Course" was recommended to me by a friend who also teaches at the university level on a one-year contract. To prepare for my first "real" job after grad school, I bought and read a selection of teaching guides, and "On Course" complemented my little library nicely. The first thing that struck me is its humorous, conversational tone (never too casual, though), and I caught myself laughing out loud several times. The humor that springs from this book is born from insight and ample proof that the author still remembers his time in the classroom and is more than acquainted with the challenge of a group of tired undergrads who routinely rely on their instructor to get them through the day.

The title, Lang admits, is really "a conceit," as a true one-to-one application of each chapter to the responding week in the semester might not be practical. I pretty much read it all the way through, likely skimmed some chapters because they did not directly apply to my particular teaching situation, but I've already, as Lang recommends, reread certain passages and will continue to do so.

Everything in here, from teaching tips, what to wear, first-day-of class advice, university politics, the mid-semester doldrums to the recognition that new instructors probably do spend too much time prepping for class is just a bit off the beaten path--colored by very recent classroom experience, it seems. For example, teaching guides typically herald the use of some type of ice breaker. Lang, while recognizing the ice breaker's virtue, realizes that its mere use can clash with an instructor's personality and comments that new undergrads are typically subjected to an overkill of ice breakers anyway. Likewise, Lang's chapter on the use of technology in the classroom surprises: while most teaching guides tend to advise, almost push for, some kind of technology in the classroom, Lang discriminates between the many uses of technology and, once again, recognizes that its use has to match the teacher's personality. He then offers suggestions on how to gradually add technology--essentially, staying in our chalk-and-blackboard comfort zone while dipping our feet into the vast ocean of electronics. This chapter, like every other one in this book, offers a variety (I really wanted to say 'treasure chest') of material and suggestions, as well as a section on resources.

It's a strength (and, one could argue, a weakness) of this book that it targets TAs, one-year lecturers, MAs, and tenure-track PhDs at the same time. The reason I imagine it could be called a weakness is because it doesn't dive deeply into specific issues either one of these groups encounters. Then again, the common address serves as a reminder of how closely we work together in this microcosm--always good advice at the start of a career.

This is the one!

I had already read 3 books on how to teach college courses, and looked at two others. Now I wish I had started with this. Nothing but very specific, practical advice. I've TA'd several times before, I'd read those other books, and I have my research to do, so I have little patience for books that tell me what I don't need to be told or that wouldn't make much difference anyway. I can say that this book has no wasted space; I was grateful for all of it. No vague generalizations. Every point gets exactly as much space as it needs and no more. No BS, no platitudes, no rehashes of common sense. Just the right amount of allowance for the fact that different teachers will find that different approaches work for them.

Useful advice, but needs retooling for science teachers

I'm a PhD student preparing to lecture a course (differential equations) for the first time this summer, after having been a teaching assistant for several years. I will first write about some useful advice I have taken from Lang's book, and then present a weakness of the book.

Writing the syllabus is a concrete way of planning the course. When you plan what you are going to do in the course, you should be thinking about what do you want students to know, not about a list of topics to cover. This shifts the emphasis from disembodied topics to what students will understand. "Put more broadly, when students walk out of the final exam, or hand you that final paper, in what ways will you have changed them?"

In the course description say why the material matters. Why are the students learning this material? Be honest and concrete. Why do you think the material is important? Be more concrete than just "This is something that someone who wants to do this field needs to know"; explain why in this field we need to know it.

When asking students if they have any questions, don't wait two seconds and then return to speaking. Wait ten seconds. This will feel uncomfortable, but if you don't give long pauses students won't have time to put together a question, and also if there is an awkward pause they will want to break it with a question.

Students have much higher retention for material at the start of a lecture. So front load it. Say what you are going to say, and then say it, so at least they remember your summary. The best is to break the lecture into 20 minutes chunks, because that is a period students can remember well. This doesn't mean you need coffee breaks between the pieces, but segment the material this way.

You don't have to teach everything in the lecture. You can assign reading that the students are responsible for knowing. In a lecture, summarize, highlight, and clarify. Practice good exposition: repeat important points and emphasize them when you are speaking. Stating them at beginning and at end is a good idea.

Get students to write about how the course is going partway through the semester. This will get them to think about the course, will let you know what is working and what isn't, and will also make students feel that you care about their learning.

Lang gives advice from Robert Boice about "active waiting". You don't need large blocks of time to prepare for classes. First make preliminary notes on a class well in advance. Second, you can start formal preparation before you have figured out the perfect way to say something. Finally, prepare in short sessions over a long period, rather than in one burst. Then instead of having a constant low level of anxiety about your upcoming all day preparation session, you have ideas for the class in the back of your head, and this is a more useful expenditure of mental resources.

I will now present a flaw in this book. I am quite detailed in this criticism, but I think for an author publishing under the Harvard University Press imprint one can hold them to a demanding standard.

The big flaw in this book is that Lang gives no useful advice (beyond general advice that applies to all teaching) for science instruction, aside from mentioning the birthday paradox, which is one of many striking ways one could start a probability course. Here are two examples of how shallow Lang's advice about science teaching is. For art history and philosophy, to get ideas of students' ideas about the subject he asks them questions about the content of the subject. For biology, rather than asking some question internal to the subject, all he comes up with is asking them what careers might depend on biology (p. 33). I don't do biology, but if I were writing a book like Lang's I would have taken the time to read a first year biology book and find some interesting internal questions in the discipline. When Lang writes about group work, which I think is an excellent idea for mathematics tutorials, his suggestion is to "Complete a complex mathematical equation, or solve a problem". I don't know what it means to complete an equation and I don't think Lang does either. I think he was trying to give a nod to science; it would be better to say he knows nothing about science and won't try to give advice, or to actually attend a science class and see what they spend their time doing. Solve the equation? Derive an equation from physical principles, like the heat equation? I think this is merely an instance of someone who knows nothing about math associating math with equations. At its best what he might have meant is writing out a chemical reaction; I guess he said complex because completing one equation didn't sound like a weighty enough task. To earn the right to speak about a subject doesn't mean that one must enter the discipline, just that they should sweat enough through it to have learned one thing that they can talk about.

I have never seen a classroom discussion in a mathematics course either when I was an undergraduate or a graduate student, and Lang doesn't give the concrete advice one would need to try this. Interesante novela de temática juvenil y gay en la que se retratan temas como la homofobia, la violencia intrafamiliar, la automutilación como forma de escape, la amistad y la identidad sexual. Quizás en su intento por abordar tantos temas resulte en algunas partes abrumadora, pero la trama se deja leer con fluidez, haciendo que sus personajes vayan avanzando en el camino y vayan afirmándose en sus decisiones e identidades.

El fuego en el que ardo nos cuenta la historia de Oscar, un adolescente homosexual que vive en un pueblo de mentes cerradas y homofóbicos, que le hacen la vida imposible a nuestro chico.
El libro trata temas muy duros, bullying, la automutilación, la homofobia, el maltrato doméstico, me ha gustado la forma en que el autor lleva estos temas, de una forma real y dura, que hace que empatizes con los personajes, los ames, los odies, aun no puedo entender como la gente puede actuar así simplemente por el hecho de que una persona no tenga sus mismos gustos sexuales.
Oscar vive un infierno, pero en medio de todo eso aparece una luz, una esperanza de que pueda ser feliz, de que las cosas cambien, conoce a Sergio que es un personaje que he adorado, tan dulce y paciente.
Añadido al acoso que vive Oscar en la escuela también está la situación familiar, con un padre maltratador y una madre sin valor para dejarlo.
La relación amorosa me gustó mucho como se dio, un poco rápida pero me imagino que normal dado el estado de Oscar, un chico con muy pocas personas que le demuestran cariño.
Lo único que no me gusto del libro eran las frases en paréntesis en medio, porque me descolocaban en la lectura, pero en general ha sido un libro que he disfrutado y que se lee rápido.
En fin que El fuego en el que ardo, es un libro de esperanzas, de enseñanzas, de tener valor, de aprender a perdonar, una historia que conmueve, los dibujos en el libro hacen que la edición sea preciosa, me ha gustado mucho y solo me queda recomendarlo.

Novela muy realista de acoso escolar y redención. Algunos personajes parecen más bien arquetipos y en general toda la historia resulta bastante previsible, pero se lee con facilidad y podría resultar una excelente lectura formativa para adolescentes, tanto para los que sufren por su orientación sexual como para los posibles acosadores. Comprendo que el autor se haya sentido inspirado por la letra de muchas canciones, pero reproducirlas literalmente en inglés al principio de cada capítulo (sin traducción) puede resultar chocante o simplemente incomprensible para muchos (no es mi caso).

A very nice gift book.

First of all thanks Amazon, I pre ordered this and it came the day before the release date. I had no idea what to expect from this book, and I have a Lot of Stones books. This is pretty okay, a big sprawling coffee table size book , long on pictures , short on stories. As a gift book it is superb. If you have Stones books you have seen most of these these pictures before. I would rank it #3 in Stones Books. Rolling With The Stones, by Bill Wyman is the best Stones book there ever was, IMO. A giant book that takes weeks to read and is put together in a way that is nothing short of fantastic. Go buy that book. Next I would say is According to the Rolling Stones. Another oversize book- forget the tiny paperback version. That too has great insight from the band itself. And in a distant third , I would say this book. If you don't want to spend the $37+ dollars fear not. I bet this book is way less than that at B&N by Xmas.

This is from a devoted Stones fan for the past 40+ yrs. I've read numerous books and have followed their careers pretty closely. First saw them live in 72 at the Fabulous Forum in LA. Wow, they knocked my socks off. Anyway, I was anxious for the arrival of this book. Being that it was endorsed and authored by the RS, plus the 50 years, I thought I was in for a treat. Well, after receiving the book and browsing through it (you can only browse because it's all pictures) I was disappointed. Most of the pictures have been published in other books. There's nothing revealing in the captions for the pictures. Plus, I don't think enough pics or credit were given to Andrew Loog Oldham (who really molded and created the 'image' of the Stones) or Ian Stewart (the second member of the group after Brian). Plus, plus Mick Taylor doesn't get that much either. Being a diehard RS fan there was no way I would not get this book. If you are a diehard, then Yes you must get it. If you are a fan and just want a good book on the RS. Then here is my ranking of Stones books.
1. Rolling with the Stones - Bill Wyman - this is by far the best book.
2. Old Gods Almost Dead - Stephen Davis - Great details about early concerts. Life of the road. Good history.
3. Up and Down with the RS - Tony Sanchez - Great stories of late 60's early 70's life in the RS bubble. May have some embellishment for dramatic flair.

Pero la sociedad que las expres� no es inm�vil, y para comprobarlo basta con observar las actitudes y los valores elaborados en el curso de los siglos por aquel mundo, en absoluto primitivo, a pesar de haberse formado en tiempos tan remotos.
