Awesome Lore.

This book is full of lore that I found to be very useful when building my campaign through Belkzen. Since the party was overwhelmed with my encounters, they left the area within a couple weeks, so we will have to revisit this in order to consume all this book has to offer.

McGrath recasts the Little Red Hen folktale in a holiday setting. A hardworking elf lives at a North Pole workshop with three lazy but likable toys: a reindeer, rabbit and penguin. The elf asks for help growing and decorating a pine tree along with other Christmas activities, but all three toys decline. Finally, the elf has a meltdown. Readers will giggle at the ne'er-do-well toys in Bonnet's sweetly amusing acrylic and pen illustrations (the reindeer floats Christmas ornaments in the tub), but the punch line the gifts under the tree are all red hens may require explanation. --Publishers Weekly

A cute little elf in red overalls and stocking cap is an efficient worker who gets everything done herself including making toys for Santa. She lives with her friends--a reindeer, a penguin and a hare--but they prefer to sleep or play rather than help with household talks. The little elf does all the preparations for Christmas herself while her friends lie around, but then they want to open all the presents on Christmas morning. This book is so stinkin' CUTE!

This book is so stinkin' CUTE! I can't believe it, it's adorable. Now, it's not like the world needs yet another version of the Little Red Hen, but this is a sweet Christmas version of the story and definitely worth the read. McGrath has integrated the holiday them nicely into her version of the tale. The little red elf is a really hard worker and she has some of the laziest friends in the North Pole.

Once upon a time, there was a reindeer, a penguin, a hare, and a little red elf. They all lived together in a comfy, cozy workshop.
The reindeer liked to snooze in the straw.
The penguin liked to relax in the bathtub.
The hare liked to hibernate by the hearth.
That left the little red elf to get all the workshop work done.

She was filling some bird feeders, by herself, when she found a pinecone. Since none of her friends would help her plant it, she decided to do the job herself. When the time came to water it or bring it in to the workshop once it had grown, she was on her own.

By the time she had strung the lights, decorated the tree, and baked cookies for Santa without any help, she had gotten a bit frustrated but tried to keep her holiday cheer. Of course, when she needed help to open all of those presents her friends came running.

"I will!" said the reindeer.
"I will!" yelled the penguin.
"I want the big one!" screamed the hare.

This is the point where the little red elf loses it and yells that she is going to open the presents by herself. Of course her friends are shocked and begin to cry. The little red elf feels terrible, apologizes, and lets the open the gifts. Boy did they dive right in. Inside every box from Santa was a Little Red Hen doll. The reindeer, penguin, and hare are confused (as are some younger readers) but the little red elf understands and thinks they've gotten the perfect gifts.

It's a cute story but I had two tiny issues. I wish there had been a bit more discussion regarding the reindeer, penguin, and hare's horrible and selfish behavior. Even my younger kids were aghast; we just talk about it a bit in class, so it's not really a big deal. (If you're looking for a version where the animal's realize how rude they've been, pick up Philemon Sturges's The Little Red Hen (Makes a pizza). ) My other issue is the ending - younger kids don't get it. I think the ending's humor is a little bit too sophisticated for the little ones.

The real star of this book, the entire reason you want to check it out and pour over it with your kid (or by yourself), is Bonnet's absolutely scrumptious and adorable illustrations. She uses a style of drawing that I tend to associate with Japan (but it's not manga or chibi style) and she throws in fantastically funny little details. I just want to hug this book.

Verdict:
I will say it again, this book is so stinkin' cute!! Bonnet's illustrations are just wonderful and really make this Christmas version of The Little Red Hen worth the read. The Little Red Elf is a sweet holiday book that you should pick up from the library.

A Christmas Hen

In an off-take of the traditional tale of The Little Red Hen, the little red elf finds some pine cones and plants them and waters them till a pine tree grows. She brings the tree inside and decorates it with lights and ornaments. Again and again, she asks her friends for help. But again and again, no one will help; and the little red elf does it all by herself. But, finally, the penguin, the reindeer and the hare all cry to help open the presents, only to reveal a collection of little red hens. Children ages 4-7 will embrace this Christmas tale.

Great Christmas twist to Little Red Hen

I wanted to expand our Christmas book collection this year, and upon recommendation of a blog I frequent, I ordered The Little Red Elf. It's a cute story with great illustrations, fun humor, and the great message of the Little Red Hen (with a Christmas theme). My kids are 4 & 6 and they both enjoyed it. I did too!

A great work!

This is probably one of the best books I've ever read. A bit tedious to read, but exceptionally practical and useful today. It is really a course of study with actual prescribed exercises. I completely agree with the previous review and am glad to see this great work available to the public again. I highly recommend this to anyone interested in mental development.

A Fantastic Resource

I first found this book as a college student majoring in Kinesiology. It's old, but the diagrams and stroke movement descriptions are perfect. If you want to refine your swim stroke than this is a must have book. The diagrams of step by step arms pulls and legs kicks of freestyle, breaststroke, Butterfly, Backstroke are great for new swimmers to view as they can see just how they should pull their arms, etc. A fantastic resource.

Agartha For Dummies

I have read many books on the Hollow Earth subject but what makes this one so good is it's refreshing perspective. Written in a short story format, it doesn't try to oversell the concept or prove anything. The matter of fact, easy going style lends itself to an enjoyable read that concentrates more on the social and spiritual side of living inside the Earth than it does on the physical aspects.

Sure it gives you some history and facts interwoven into the story but has been dummied down for the simplistic learning levels and the lack of ability of the our civilization to think outside the box.

I have studied this subject at great length and am astounded at the accuracy, validation and new insights. Mariana's an expert writer and is shows with her effortless style. A great book...and not just for those with bad fathers

I just finished "When Father Is A Bad Word". I had a wonderful father, but like many fathers in the past generation he concentrated on providing financially and rearing well-mannered Christian children. Far from the sort of father Kuiper talks about. But no earthly father is perfect like our Heavenly Father. This book brought me new insight into the undeserved love I receive from my Father in heaven. What grace He shows in calling us His children! Dan Kuiper uses humor and family stories most of us can relate to. I look forward to more books by this excellent author.

"Our Father which art in Heaven..."

doesn't come out very well if you have a poor relationship with your earthly father. Dan Kuiper, a son, husband, father, and compassionate counselor has written a wonderful book about broken relationships, forgiveness and how to put your heart into a condition which is capable of accepting God's love. Although "Father" definitely is not, nor has it ever been, a bad word to me, I found this book to be very helpful and authentic. I finished this book within 24 hours of purchasing it!

Dan Kuiper has written a book that every Christian should read. "When Father is a Bad Word" examines how personal and cultural ideas about "bad fathers" get overlaid onto our thoughts and our feelings about our Heavenly Father.

That is a BIG DEAL. Your unconscious ideas about earthly fathers can block your ability to receive God's love for you. Issues about earthly fathers can turn God's love from an experience you have in every fiber of your being to a distant, theoretical idea.
