First published in 1993 but out of print for years, Our Troth is back in print, featuring updates and additions from its original compiler, Kveldulf Gundarsson, and from many other Heathen writers, all edited by well-known author Diana L. Paxson. Volume 1 covers the history and lore of Heathen religion, from its deepest Stone Age roots to its flowering today, with information on the Gods, Goddesses, and other beings that receive honor and worship, and the ethics of being Heathen.

A Must Have on any Heathen's Library Shelf
By Spence the Elder
Our Troth Volume I
Compiled By Kveldulf Gundarsson

Truly an excellent work. This competently researched massive repository of Germanic Lore is an absolute must for any Asatru/Heathen library. I really appreciated, Part One: History. Very few modern works on Heathenry go into the basic foundations of the early societies of Northern Europe. Volume 1's tracking of the Pre-Migration period is seldom mentioned outside academia. Following the progression of the Indo-European migration thru the Bronze and Iron Age's established a strong foundation from which to build. While much of the information on the early periods is based of a fair amount of speculation, it is well researched scholarly speculation. These hypothesis's are based on the most up to date research by both Archeological and Linguistic scholars.

Part Two: Lore. Probably one of the most in-depth and well organized looks at the "Norse Pantheon", a reader will be able to find outside of Academia. If any of the players in Norse Mythology have been missed I can't think of them. I especially like the large sections on Tyr and Heimdal. Both of which are often given only minor places in many modern works.

I have only two minor problems with this otherwise excellent work. Both of which are more my personal opinion rather than reflection on the book itself. Firstly, I found the lack of an index very annoying. My brain cells cannot retain all this information and a quick reference index would have been a great help to me. Granted I know why there is not one , (basically cost and size, what chapter do you leave out in order to include and index?), and while I understand and agree with the reasoning I don't have to like it. I will say however, that the book itself is very well organized and that the table of contents is straight forward and easy to use. My second problem is, again not directed at the information presented, but more at my ability to shift mental gears. I'll explain; this work is the cooperative effort of over 40 people and researched by many, many more. As a consequence of multiple authors, the writing styles from section to section change rather abruptly at times. I found that I had to set the book down and come back to it later on several occasions. It was like finishing a chapter in a Jim Butcher novel and then starting Nietzsche, I had problems shifting mental gears. Again more of a readers problem than an authors. Having said this, these were the only faults I have so far found in Volume One so now I'm picking nits.

All & all I highly recommend this work for anyone interested in Germanic/Norse History, Myth, Lore or the reconstruction of Northern European ancestral religion, "Our Troth Volume 1", is a MUST have!

In Frith,
Spence The Elder

Must have for those who wish to read of Northern European and Germanic Culture and religion
By Chris
This book is an amazing and well thought out explanation of the Northern and Germanic culture and religions from as far back as is possible with historical data. I would personally recommend that anyone interested in History, Culture, or Religion from these areas should buy this book. It is neatly organized into sections that can be read independantly of each other but is best read all together. The amazing amount of detailed work and effort put into this is work is amazing. The detail available is great but it can sometimes feel overwhelming to read and absorb. None the less I would recommend this book to anyone interested in the topics addressed in it, it is surely a new way of looking at things.

Wouldn't call this a romance. But it's interesting and REAL.
By Kim
Reviewed for Read Your Writes Book Reviews.

****This book deals with sexual abuse of a minor and how that abuse has affected the abusee years later.****

Before I start, I need to point out this book isn't your typical romance. The main character, Sarah, has serious issues.

This is the first story I've read by Rebecca Rogers Maher. In fact, before this book, I've never heard of her. I went to her website and looked her up. I will say that it was quite a treat to find an author who made a conscience decision to write about real people in real situations.

I'm going to do what I don't like to do with reviews and actually tell you what happened with the book. I generally HATE giving away too much about a book, because then why would you buy it.

Like most victims of sexual abuse, Sarah knew her abuser. She was even very close to him and loved him with all her heart. The abuse occurred when Sarah was fourteen. She feels that she was old enough to have said no and thus feels in some ways she encouraged it and that it was fine. She finds relief from her demons by cutting herself. Throughout the book Sarah is a nurturer and protector. She protects her abuser by making excuses for him and she protects her mother by not telling her about the abuse and talking about her feelings for all of these years, and talking about all the sacrifices her mother made for her and feeling she has to be with her mother, when she's going through a horrible loss. To a certain extent, it would appear that Sarah's mother unbeknownst to her encouraged the abuse.

I don't want to say that Sarah is your typical sexual abuse survivor, because there isn't anything typical about this sort of thing. Sarah continues to abuse her body by hooking up with guys she doesn't care about and know will never care about her, until she made a mistake and mis-read Joe. Sarah likes to be in control and after one night, Joe turned the tables on her.

I found Joe to be a remarkable man in that at the first sign of trouble he didn't run. Through photography, Joe has learned to read people. He immediately knows that Sarah is hiding something. He just doesn't know what and how bad it actually is. Joe isn't a perfect man and he doesn't pretend to be. He has his own past that he works hard to overcome every single day. Joe is a strong man and he fights for Sarah every single day.

What I like about this book is that it shows Sarah as a survivor. She doesn't see herself as that, but she is. She's conflicted about a lot of things in her life and she tries for perfection. "Sarah", like so many other women in the world is REAL.

When I got this book, I had absolutely no idea what it was really about. You don't see a happily ever after ending. Part of me wants to say that this isn't even a romance book. What you do get is a story that's real. I'm sure there are hundreds, if not thousands of "Sarahs" out there. For those "Sarahs:, I think this book lets them know there is hope.

The book is rather short. It's only 126 pages. I found the ending to be very abrupt. You can only assume that Sarah and Joe were actually able to overcome all the demons from their past and realize that it's okay to be happy and in love with someone who truly loves you and would never ever hurt you.

I don't usually recommend books which I haven't read. However, Fault Lines is part of a trilogy written by Rebecca. The first book in the series is I'll Become The Sea. This book showcases the story of Jane, Sarah's best friend. Fault Lines vaguely mentions Jane having a tattered past. I am curious to see what it was and how she truly managed to overcome her demons to find her happy ending. I am definitely adding it to my to read list.

I was provided an Advanced Readers Copy via NetGalley in order to review this book.

Not what I expected...
By Smitten with Reading
My Review:

I rate my books based on how much I enjoy the book. Honestly this is not a book that I enjoyed. Not because there's anything wrong with the book...there absolutely is not. But this is not a happy book. This book is about Sarah facing the demons from being sexually molested by her uncle when she was 14 years old. There's nothing happy about the book...except for the fact that she's getting better, but that's not an easy process to watch as you read this book.

The book is extremely well-written and interesting, but I kept reading it wondering why I was doing so when the entire book was extremely depressing (at least to me.) This is not a book about romance...although there is a side-story that is somewhat romantic between Sarah and Joe. But that's not the focus of the book. The focus is on Sarah and her learning to forgive and love herself... as well as learn how to deal with her mother and dying uncle for perpetuating and letting this horrible awful thing happen to her.

This is one of those gritty, soul-searching style of books that you see in places like Oprah's book club. While I understand that some people love them, I am not one of them. I like to leave a book feeling happier than when I started it. This book deals with very difficult and reality-based situations that make it a very difficult read. While, not for me, it was a very well-written book...so if those kinds of books appeal to you, then this very well may be a book that you need to add to your TBR pile.

I received a complementary copy of this book in return for an honest review.

Both cultural studies and psychology collections, especially those at the college level, will welcome the blend of psychology and history in AMERICAN FEAR; THE CAUSES AND CONSEQUENCES OF HIGH ANXIETY. Fear has always been a part of American culture but has become even more ingrained and deeply rooted in modern times: Peter Stearns examines the American psyche, how fear leads to choices on insurance, risk management, and aggression, and more. Also strongly recommended for classroom discussion.

Tag along on this New York Times bestselling “witty, entertaining romp” (The New York Times Book Review) as Eric Winer travels the world, from Athens to Silicon Valley—and back through history, too—to show how creative genius flourishes in specific places at specific times.

In this “intellectual odyssey, traveler’s diary, and comic novel all rolled into one” (Daniel Gilbert, author of Stumbling on Happiness), acclaimed travel writer Weiner sets out to examine the connection between our surroundings and our most innovative ideas. A “superb travel guide: funny, knowledgeable, and self-deprecating” (The Washington Post), he explores the history of places like Vienna of 1900, Renaissance Florence, ancient Athens, Song Dynasty Hangzhou, and Silicon Valley to show how certain urban settings are conducive to ingenuity. With his trademark insightful humor, this “big-hearted humanist” (The Wall Street Journal) walks the same paths as the geniuses who flourished in these settings to see if the spirit of what inspired figures like Socrates, Michelangelo, and Leonardo remains. In these places, Weiner asks, “What was in the air, and can we bottle it?”

“Fun and thought provoking” (Miami Herald), The Geography of Genius reevaluates the importance of culture in nurturing creativity and “offers a practical map for how we can all become a bit more inventive” (Adam Grant, author of Originals).

Amazon.com Review
An Amazon Best Book of January 2016: Eric Weiner’s first book, The Geography of Bliss, found him in search of the happiest places on Earth. Now, in The Geography of Genius, he looks for creative hotbeds where geniuses from Socrates to Steve Jobs thrived, and asks why. Moreover, why do these hotbeds eventually fizzle? The book—an irreverent and surprisingly entertaining blend of historical biography, travel essay, and sociological study—centers around this quote by Plato: “What is honored in a country will be cultivated there,” be it intellectual discourse, art, music, literature, or life-altering gadgets like the iPhone. In the process of determining the conditions by which golden ages of genius happened when and where they did, Weiner also uncovers intriguing anecdotes that serve to illuminate and humanize god-like “characters” like Michelangelo, Beethoven, and Freud. He likewise stumbles upon answers to compelling questions like, why does genius seem like such a boy’s club? I am one of those people who dog-ear pages that contain things I find particularly interesting, and few pages of this book remained intact. There are enough fascinating and fun factoids in The Geography of Genius to keep you supplied at cocktail parties and around water coolers for years. But aside from that, it documents a moving quest that wasn’t undertaken just to satisfy a journalist’s curiosity. Weiner is a father and while it’s supposedly “too late for him,” his young daughter can still reap the lessons he learned from his travels, from defining genius, and apply them to her life. I would argue it isn’t too late for any of us. –Erin Kodicek

— Wall Street Journal

— Daniel Gilbert, Harvard professor and bestselling author of Stumbling on Happiness

“An entertaining and thought-provoking book, a combination of history and travelogue… Part of the book's charm stems from the pure joy of experiencing these places alongside a narrator like Weiner… His wry wit shines through as he drinks sublime tea in China and contemplates a coffin collar in an Edinburgh museum; as he interviews figures such as Jack Ma, a Hangzhou native who founded multibillion dollar company Alibaba; and as he wanders the Ringstrasse of Vienna and the strip malls of Silicon Valley, pondering the conditions that lead to genius.”
— Christian Science Monitor

"Why do certain places produce a spontaneous eruption of creativity? What made Athens and Florence and Silicon Valley? This witty and fun book has an insight in every paragraph. It’s a charming mix of history and wisdom cloaked as a rollicking travelogue filled with colorful characters."

"Weiner is an affable tour guide and a lively, witty writer in the style of Bill Bryson; the connections he makes between places of genius are sharp and sometime unexpected."

Around The World In 80 Anecdotes
By Allan M. Lees
There's a school of thought that runs something like this: the average US citizen isn't very bright, has a limited attention span, and has an appetite only for the superficial. So if you want to write a book about something you feel to be important, you have to sugar the pill - with lots and lots of sugar and make sure it's a very small pill indeed.

Hence the style "American-Folksy." In this genre the author leads the reader gently along by means of first-person narrative, tons of anecdote, and just the gentlest hint of new information here and there. The lexicon is undemanding and the pace is calculated to be just brisk enough to prevent the onset of catatonia while being leisurely enough not to require any strenuous intellectual activity on the part of the reader. It's basically DisneyWords.

This is a well-tried genre used across a wide variety of subjects. In Search of Excellence and The Omnivore's Dilemma both use the same style despite their contexts being very different. And Weiner uses American-Folksy here for precisely the same reasons and to precisely the same effect. The purpose of American-Folksy is to take something that could have made a somewhat interesting 6-page monograph and stretch it out into a book-length peregrination.

The problem with American-Folksy, however is that it's not just a question of stretching things out and diluting ideas into easy-to-digest micro-fragments. The core problem is that when you meander around a topic rather than condense it down to its essentials you can very easily overlook the logical flaws inherent in your treatment and the gaps in your arguments. And that's precisely the problem with this book. It tries to identify a particular set of conditions that may give rise to an unusual density of "geniuses" at a particular moment in time. In other words, it tries to use the same concept as Jared Diamond's seminal Guns Germs and Steel: what's the "secret sauce" that results in a particular outcome?

Unfortunately "genius" is a slippery concept. Weiner is never quite sure whether he means creativity or something else. He's also uncertain about whether "genius" is objective or subjective. And when it comes to the accretion of "helpful facts and ideas" he ranges so widely that his central thesis appears to collapse into nothing more than an assortment of anecdotes. He cites studies that purport to prove what the experimenters were hoping to find (which, we know, are usually not worth the paper they are written on) and in which the "findings" are wonderfully undefined: as in "the test subjects were more creative." How was this "creativity" measured? Was it a properly designed double-blind study? Well, we do at least have a proper bibliography so if we're sufficiently interested we can review the research ourselves but it's difficult to have much confidence in what's presented.

This is not mere nit-picking. The objection is at the heart of empiricism. If you can't define it you can't measure it, and if you can't measure it you can't make meaningful statements about it. Most people are content with vague notions that blur at the edges because they rarely stop to think about what they truly are attempting to convey. We habitually use language with tremendous imprecision, so that "I'm starving" actually means "I've never actually been truly hungry in my life but I haven't eaten for ninety minutes and I always eat a cheeseburger and fries around this time of day." For quotidian discourse this kind of lazy speech is acceptable (after all, who in the USA has every been truly hungry?) but it's not acceptable in a book purporting to investigate a serious phenomenon and draw conclusions about it. Nor is the assumption that correlation is causation. For every "contributory factor" Weiner purports to identify it's easy to think of several instances in which genius did not emerge. In Search Of Excellence suffered from precisely the same problem: cherry pick a few outcomes, work backwards to identify common features, and voila: you have the desired recipe. Except that there are lots of other examples where the same recipe doesn't produce the same outcome. Every newbie statistician learns this lesson; it's a shame that this wasn't among the many anecdotes Weiner picked up in the course of his peripatesis.

Another problem comes from the fact that for all the name-dropping, Weiner doesn't actually know very much about the subjects he ranges across. When discussing Einstein, for example, he makes the legitimate point that had the great man been born in another era he wouldn't have developed his Special Theory of Relativity. But Weiner seems to think this would have been because (a) there wouldn't have been the physicists around to appreciate it, and (b) the young Einstein would have chosen a different contemporary field of study where there were more obvious opportunities. What Weiner doesn't note, however (doubtless because he doesn't know much about physics) is that without the prior contributions of Maxwell and Lorentz the Special Theory could not have been developed, just as without Lyell it is unlikely that Darwin would have been able to develop his theory of Evolution. These (and several other examples) demonstrate that it is highly unwise to write a book speculating about the "causes" of genius when you don't have a grasp of the fundamentals. It's easy to be superficial; quite another matter really to get to grips with the material. Weiner, like so many people of our age, is content to confuse surface with depth.

The final flaw in Weiner's somewhat sketchy thesis comes in the last chapter when he breathlessly alights in Silicon Valley. Whereas the "genius" examples Weiner selected from the vast skein of history contributed new ideas and new perspectives to humanity, Weiner's Valley examples contribute merely utility. Utility is a good thing, but if the provision of utility were a qualifier for the epithet "genius" then surely Weiner should have heaped upon our plate in earlier chapters examples from the Industrial Revolution? Surely the development of the railway, the development of steel cutlery, the development of internal plumbing and central heating and powered elevators and suchlike should have been included in his round-the-world-in-eighty-anecdotes book? Weiner seems to accept that the utility of a smartphone or a social media website is akin to the intellectual breakthroughs he has charted earlier. Yet a moment's reflection shows this to be nonsense. I may personally value toilet paper more than I value the works of Jacques Derrida but that doesn't make the guy who invented the machine to make toilet paper a "genius." This is particularly germane because today's Silicon Valley is largely caught up in trivia. Few are working on the complex underpinnings of our information age. The great leaps forward (in processor and memory devices, in data storage, in data transmission and networking) have been taken for granted and now the focus is on superficial objectives such as creating apps that enable people to select the right wine pairing with their choice of main course. While perhaps marginally useful they are not game-changing. Facebook and Twitter may be used by people occasionally for more than just posting pictures of cats but in essence they are merely outlets for virtual graffiti. And in contrast to other locations cited earlier in the book (the central thesis of which is that at a particular moment in time a particular place becomes the incubator for many different forms of genius) Silicon Valley has spawned no cultural efflorescence. For all the thousands of geeks tapping away at keyboards trying to invent the Next Big App there has been no outpouring of art. These young wannabes are content to listen to stale formulaic pop, read each other's Tweets, and the closest to high culture they ever reach is Friday night standup improv. At least Manchester's dark satanic mills inspired Blake.

By failing to grasp the difference between the useful and the revolutionary, and by signally failing ever to define (even vaguely) what he might mean by "genius" Weiner ultimately reveals that the cards he's been attempting to play are nothing more than a random assortment. It's the ultimate in bathos.

Perhaps if Weiner had attempted to distill his thesis into a handful of pages he'd have been forced to see its intellectual inadequacies and then, perhaps, he might have been motivated to address them. The result would have been an interesting thesis. As it is, The Geography of Genius reads rather as if someone had given a precocious High School student a year-long travel grant. It's an interesting vacation report but little more. If you are looking for an "airport book" but don't care for the tedium of thrillers-by-numbers or the latest ghost-written tell-all of some ephemeral celebrity, this book will offer a little more substance to while away a few hours. But it could, in principle at least, have offered a great deal more.

Great idea to explore those places where there has been ...
By Buzzer
I was initially attracted to this book by the theme. Great idea to explore those places where there has been a hot bed of great ideas. But I must say, it was a disappointment. The best line I received from the author was his assessment of his college years. "A period of cheap beer and unsuitable women". I could identify with that. I found his style of writing very confusing and difficult to follow. Now that may be the result of my low IQ, but he demonstrated a high degree of resources from the fields of psychology and sociology and since my days at college when I was required to take courses in these fields I have always found them replete with phrases of double-speak and obfuscation. My area of interest has always been science and except for some brief mention of Newton and Darwin science was not a big feature here. He made Sigmund Freud out to be some kind of god. His liberal/socialistic leaning was also evident and not very entertaining. Whenever there was some use of a generic person he attempted to be politically correct by balancing between "he" and "she". This I found tiresome.
I would not recommend this book.

The value of this book increases as you near the end
By Mark Pearce
First of all, this book does strike one as being a bit of a travelogue, rather than the historic analysis that the title presumes it to be, but I hung on through the opening chapters and began to find more correlations and soft conclusions as the observations and comparisons mounted. Plus, I basically agree with Weiner’s contention that (a society) gets the geniuses that it demands and deserves. To someone who hasn’t read the book that may sound like a flimsy statement, but I feel it holds a core truth worthy of deeper appreciation and application.

This book could be of tremendous importance to anyone working to develop a community culture in the arts, sciences, technology, ecology, vinology, industry, etc.

What Management Is: How It Works and Why It's Everyone's Business, by Joan Magretta

A beginner's guide and a bible for one of the greatest social innovations of modern times: the discipline of management.

Whether you’re new to the field or a seasoned executive, this book will give you a firm grasp on what it takes to make an organization perform. It presents the basic principles of management simply, but not simplistically. Why did an eBay succeed where a Webvan did not? Why do you need both a business model and a strategy? Why is it impossible to manage without the right performance measures, and do yours pass the test?

What Management Is is both a beginner’s guide and a bible for one of the greatest social innovations of modern times: the discipline of management. Joan Magretta, a former top editor at the Harvard Business Review, distills the wisdom of a bewildering sea of books and articles into one simple, clear volume, explaining both the logic of successful organizations and how that logic is embodied in practice.

Magretta makes rich use of examples— contemporary and historical—to bring to life management’s High Concepts: value creation, business models, competitive strategy, and organizational design. She devotes equal attention to the often unwritten rules of execution that characterize the best-performing organizations. Throughout she shows how the principles of management that work in for-profit businesses can—and must—be applied to nonprofits as well.

Most management books preach a single formula or a single fad. This one roams knowledgeably over the best that has been thought and written with a practical eye for what matters in real organizations. Not since Peter Drucker’s great work of the 1950s and 1960s has there been a comparable effort to present the work of management as a coherent whole, to take stock of the current state of play, and to write about it thoughtfully for readers of all backgrounds. Newcomers will find the basics demystified. More experienced readers will recognize a store of useful wisdom and a framework for improving their own performance.

This is the big-picture management book for our times. It defines a common standard of managerial literacy that will help all of us lead more productive lives, whether we aspire to be managers or not.

Drucker

What Management Is Preface When Everything Changes, What Stays the Same?
As any good manager will tell you, dealing with change is one of management’s most difficult responsibilities. Competition is dynamic, even among nonprofits, and the arena in which organizations operate is constantly changing. Customers’ needs shift. New business models and new rivals appear without warning. Old technologies evolve and new ones are created. A new generation takes its place in the workforce, bringing with it new attitudes and values. But the fundamental job of management—creating value for customers by helping people to be more productive and innovative in a common effort—hasn’t changed one bit.

Seasoned leaders who have lived through two or three decades of ground-shaking change understand this. They have experienced one shock after another and lived to tell the tale. Globalization, the Internet, capital market innovation, social media—each of these, as it arrived, felt like a major earthquake that would forever change the business landscape. As shifts like these are underway, and as you are forced to deal with them, it can feel like you are living through something so radically different that it renders obsolete everything you do and know.

Some management books feed off that feeling. They overstate the case for change, all the while drowning managers in empty jargon and insisting that all the old rules are useless when just the opposite is true. In periods of great change, you need the time-tested fundamentals more than ever in order to make sense of what’s unfolding around you.

Dealing effectively with change, then, requires a clear understanding of what doesn’t change. To know what really is different, you must first know what stays the same and why. That’s what this book is all about—the enduring fundamentals, ideas that have stood the test of time. Social media, for example, may well replace established channels of distribution and communication, but the fundamental need to reach and serve customers remains the same. If I were writing this book today, I might choose different organizations to illustrate those ideas—Zynga instead of eBay, Zara instead of Target, Zipcar instead of Enterprise. The names change and the context changes, but the core ideas stay the same.

Organizations that were once highly successful often falter. Dell, Inc., is a case in point. After almost three decades, Dell’s direct business model has run out of steam. But that doesn’t undermine the fact that it illustrates beautifully the elements of a good business model or that its managers succeeded in finding performance measures that matched and supported the value they were trying to create—an important lesson for any organization. Dell no longer has the competitive advantage it once enjoyed, but that doesn’t invalidate the concepts the Dell story illustrates. Management is easier to describe than it is to do. Even outstanding companies make mistakes. Good strategies can be enduring, but they don’t last forever. All the companies in this book convey timeless principles, ideas that don’t change even if the facts of the case do.

Management is a discipline. Once mastered it will help you to navigate the external shifts in the business environment and those internal to your own organization. I’ll go a step further. I believe the core ideas have never been as timely and relevant for so many people working in both the private and public sectors as they are today.

Why do I say that? Consider this assessment from BusinessWeek, which chose What Management Is as one of the best books of the year when it first appeared: “At a moment when many are disillusioned by the blatant self-interest of outrageously paid business leaders, this book is an urgent call to get back to the basics. It reminds us why the discipline of management truly matters. It rejects the notion that a simple fad can make a meaningful difference. . . . It will help leaders understand better how the ideas that form the foundation of good management have . . . powerfully altered our economy and our lives. That’s a potent message in this disillusioning time.”

If anything, we may be even more disillusioned and certainly more conflicted about management today. You don’t have to search long and hard to find blatant self-interest and outrageously paid business leaders. At the same time, you don’t have to look far to find incredible business and social sector leaders who have made the world a better place.

But we need to look past those celebrity villains and heroes in order to appreciate the discipline of management and the prosperity it creates. This is the difficult work carried out by legions of managers known only inside their organizations. It’s easy to lose sight of the importance of that work, but our standard of living depends on the productivity and innovativeness of organizations of all sizes and stripes. Organizations don’t just happen by themselves. Management makes them possible. Good management makes them—and society as a whole—more prosperous.

In these challenging economic times, we need many more effective managers, and a renewed and more balanced view of management itself. I hope this book offers readers just that. It contains a dose of realism about what management is and some idealism about what it can and should be. Above all, it is a book about why and how management matters.

If you only read one book about Management, this should be it.
By A. Rutt
As Magretta writes, there are about 2000 management books published a year and if each of them has only 10 takeaways, then that's a lot of 'advice' floating out there! And the more things change, the more the underlying principles apply. So this is a great 'tour d'horizon' ('overview') as The Economist put it about the first edition, that is written simply and without management-speak.

And it does what it says on the tin. If you want to know what management is, this is the book for you. Not leadership specifically, not management strategies or techniques, but an explanation of what and why management matters and what it is comprised of. If you've never taken a business class, if you are a new manager, if you are looking for a book for new managers, if you want a 'step-back' to remind you what it's all about as a manager, then I cannot speak highly enough of this simple book.

And if you have no business background and are mystified sometimes about why companies do certain things, then this book will also help explain what the managers are trying to do, or should be trying to do!

I have a BA in Business and an MBA, and have had a 25 year career as a manager starting at the bottom of the ladder, etc, etc.

Malcolm Gladwell could have done a better job writing this book
By Quijote
I was expecting more from a book written by people associated with HBR. The title of each chapter is promising but the content lacks insight. Malcolm Gladwell could have done a better job writing this book.

Great Management Primer
By S. Steven Maese
I give this book to, and discuss it with, anyone in my company that is going into entry level management. This is a great primer for understanding the role of a manager. Magretta conveys basic concepts clearly and concisely. I recommend this book to anyone.

Terrance Dean worked his way up for more than ten years in the entertainment industry from intern to executive, and has lived the life of glitz and bling along with Hollywood and Hip Hop’s most glamorous heavy hitters. As a gay man immersed within the world of the famous and the fabulous, Dean knows well the industry’s secrets and the façade that is kept, that for men, promotes machismo and hetero-normative behavior.

Most of what Dean unveils in this book is fascinating and salacious but all of it is true. He also shares his own secrets, and an account of the pain of his mother’s addiction, and the poverty and molestation he experienced as a child.

Hiding in Hip Hop is not a traditional tell-all. It’s personal. It’s poignant. It’s a provocative and honest look at stardom and sexuality.

Family, Community, and Love Authored this Book
By Ceeski
An entertaining, insightful, and inspiring story of one Black gay man that is also the story of countless others who are similarly situated. What makes this one special are the very elements that inspired him to tell his story, which include his need for family, community, and a life partner. Three cheers for his determination to grow, his willingness to be vulnerable, and his drive to be a whole human being, instead of just another fractured one.

In awe
By Yolanda Valdez
I chose this book to hear who was on the "DL" and I understood some of the puzzle talk. I knew who some of the real characters were as well. I don't understand the paranoia because if Gay men can be true to who they are and not pretend, then who cares. I felt Terrance could've saved himself grief years earlier by being honest.

Pretty enlightening! DOESN'T name names, but gives just enough hints that would allow you to figure out who's he's talking about if you are a familiar with that particular celebrities. He even hinted at STAND-UP comics!
