About the Author
A native of northern Ohio, HOWARD BOTT graduated from a military academy in Tennessee, where he encountered racial segregation, an experience that stayed with him all his life. After high school, Howard enlisted in the army, where he learned Russian at the Defense Language Institute in California and taught radio voice intercept at the Army Security Agency School near Boston. Pleasant memories of California drew him back to settle there after leaving the army. He had careers as a police officer and a licensed marriage and family therapist, with both careers satisfying in different ways his fascination with human relationships. His interests increasingly focused on American history, particularly the Civil War, and slavery in the American South. He is the author of three novels and numerous short stories. He lives in the San Francisco Bay Area with his wife Nancy.

Don't miss it !!

An extensively researched book into the history of slavery. Through 3 generations, the author traces the hard to believe violence and despair that faced enslaved people. The book describes in greater detail than I had ever seen, the hopelessness of slaves on the Southern plantations, especially prior to the Civil War. It shows a vicious side of the "genteel" plantation owners and their families which a recent trip to the plantations of Louisiana had not shown to me. Certainly an eye-opening examination of a bad part of our countries past. The ending opens itself to a sequel, which I can't wait to read.

This writer is probably considered excellent but personally I don't like when the go on and on about something philosophically. The ending was awful. I am still wondering what happened to the last slave. Did she die, did she get her freedom. Awful.

A MUST for a BMW Owner!

Ever wonder why BMW dealerships make a ton of money? They have this book!

My car is a 2002 325i. I use this book to analyze the 1-4 jobs required for the BMW. I study the job and wonder, is the dealership ripping me off or providing a quality service? Can I do this myself or should I outsource?

Case #1: The key system - The auto keys use a system based on the car's memory. I had a problem where the keys were operating out of order. Dealership wanted $125 to LOOK at it. Saved $50 and purchased book. Looked up key system in book. Solved key problem in 30 mintues.

Case #2: The Oil and Air Filter System - A little scary with an import because it looks different than US cars. The book explains everything, so I do these myself, saving probably $200-$400 per year.

Case #3: The Coolant Flush - Dealer wants $250 to perform flush. I was against this at first, until the book pointed out a bleed system and a website mentioned that the dealership uses a special auto tool with the bleed system to extract air from the system. Special Auto Tools are where it might be worth taking to a dealer. This case is still open, but its good to know I can do it if things get tight.

Good service manual

I really like the hardback book format of this. Good service manual for all the specifications and torques and the basics on how things come apart and go back together. I go to this first to find out about any needed work on my 2004 BMW 325i. Then I head to the forum boards to get the detail tricks.

Absolutely the best...at a price

This is absolutely the BEST manual for the E46 BMW, but pricey at over $80. It's also huge, with over 1400 pages, though all of those are not dedicated to repair procedures. I would judge 40% of the heavy book to be electrical drawings and diagnostic codes. Maybe that's to be expected for a vehicle that has become so electronically complex. I would have preferred this be in a 2-volume format, so I could leave that last 40% on the bookshelf when working on the car.

I also bought the Haynes manual for the E46; 320 pages. Not nearly as complete, but at under $20, and a real bargain. I prefer having them both. I will easily recover the cost after the first job that allows me to do the work myself instead of taking the car to the shop. If I had to choose, dollar-for-dollar, the Haynes manual probably delivers greater value.

About the Author
Sherry F. Colb is Professor of Law and Charles Evans Hughes Scholar at Cornell University Law School, where she teaches courses in animal rights, evidence, and criminal procedure. She is a graduate of Columbia College and Harvard Law School, and a former law clerk to the late Supreme Court Justice Harry A. Blackmun. Colb lives in Ithaca, New York, with her husband, two daughters, and two mixed-breed dogs.

Very Thoughtful arguments.

From the title, I thought this book would be "vegan light", but it is anything but. The author is a law professor at Cornell and it shows. She has very carefully thought out all the the answers to the questions that are typically asked of vegans. I was extremely impressed by her answers and the readability of the book overall. Even for long-time vegans who know it all, there is something to be gained from Colb's perspective. I highly recommend it.

Beautiful writing & incisive analysis

“Mind if I order the cheeseburger?” is a spectacular exploration of veganism and animal rights that will entirely engross both the meat-eater who is exploring the concept of veganism for the first time, as well as the veteran vegan/animal rights supporter who has read most of the vegan literature cannon.

I especially enjoyed:

1) The writing. Colb writes beautifully. Every chapter is full of gems of rhetorical construction that are, quite simply, fun to read.

2) Colb's compassionate and detailed treatment of each question. Some of these questions drive vegans a bit nuts, and we may want to say, “you cannot be serious!,” but Colb explains (for every single question) why the question makes sense from the vantage of the one asking it. For each of the thirteen questions Colb explores (and these do represent the thirteen most important questions), she thoroughly lays out the psychology behind the question, why the question is reasonable (she puts the most positive possible spin on the philosophical rational for it), and her thoughts in response.

3) The analysis. Colb brings her brilliant legal scholar’s mind to both why the question is asked and to her response. Most chapters include incisive analogies that distill each issue to its essence, and some of them are laugh-out-loud funny (e.g., a bad Samaritan who passes by a dying person and then drops by the bookstore to purchase Atlas Shrugged).

Although all 13 chapters include the three qualities I just listed, I particularly enjoyed Colb’s treatment of: 1) abortion; 2) animals eating other animals in nature; 3) plants being alive and perhaps suffering; 4) the idea that since animals are already dead, eating meat does not lend complicity to harm; and 5) the fact that farm animals would not exist if not for the meat industry.

Although deeply philosophical and packed with detailed analysis of tough questions, the book is (as noted) an absolute pleasure to read.

If I could give more than five stars, I would.

Great read!

I have read a few books on veganism and animal rights and this is one of the best. As a law professor Sherry Colb seems very careful about making arguments on behalf of veganism that are really solid. And I think she succeeds with that. At the same time the language is clear and accessible. The book's main focus are on food choices and does not cover everything within the field of animal rights. The foreword by Masson is also great. I recommend!!

Good For The Basic Sources

Cleopatra: A Sourcebook is a great collection of abridged sources regarding Queen Cleopatra VII. The evolution of her story is also an interesting read. My only problems with the book came from the charts and maps at the end. The Ptolemaic family tree, though abbreviated, is also inaccurate. The largest mistake shows Mark Antony as Cleopatra's brother! As for the map of Alexandria, the Western city walls are shown to be in the sea. This had to have been a computer design error, but it's kind of sad that no one caught it.

Very good resource for the student of Cleopatra, with all the ancient sources (and a few newer ones) pulled together in one place. I only missed better descriptions of where the texts come from, especially since many of them seem to be only available as later copies of dubious provenance.

Michael D. Good for indepth Old Testament Study

This is a good book for an indepth study of the Old Testament. Coogan does a good job of placing the Old Testament in context with history and other cultures around the Israelites. This book was required for my seminary class on the Old Testament. The only reason I didn't give it 5 starts is that it is a little expensive (not so much for a college text book though) and may be a little too indepth for the average Bible study. It would make a good reference for someone leading a Bible study on the Old Testament. It may challenge preconceived ideas that some may have about the authors and time frame of the Old Testament books, just remember the Old Testament is not about who wrote the text, but who inspired the text. If you want a book that places the different periods of the Old Testament into context, this is a good source.

Excellent Biblical Reference

The textbook provides an in depth insight into the Old Testament presented in a factual manner. Other ancient texts are introduced and linked to similar events in the Bible without judgment or an opinion. The reader responsible for his or her decision as to reliability and accuracy. I enjoyed reading the textbook; it opened up a world not taught in religious and Sunday schools. I highly recommend this text to anyone with an unbiased interest in the Old Testament.

About the Author

JOEL FUHRMAN, M.D., is a board-certified family physician and nutritional researcher who specializes in preventing and reversing disease through nutritional and natural methods. Dr. Fuhrman is the research director of the Nutritional Research Foundation. He is the author of several books, including the New York Times bestsellers Eat to Live, Super Immunity, Eat to Live Cookbook, The End of Dieting, and The End of Diabetes.

ROBERT PHILLIPS was a Vice President at Merrill Lynch suffering with sarcoidosis, a serious health condition that effected his breathing. Get this book if you are busy!!

I've purchased all of Dr. Fuhrman's cookbooks, even the Drop 10 in 20 PDF from his website (which has some quick and easy recipes that are great as well) and all of them have their merits. The previous cookbook book (200 recipes) has more complicated recipes that are also have their place when you want to step it up. But this one has microwave recipes!! Which I think is great when you don't feel like cooking or you just don't feel like eating what you have already planned for the week. Get them all! I've lost 5 lbs already and I've only been on this Nutritrian diet for 2 weeks!

I love this book becasue it has lots of good recipes that I can make easily and I know the ingredients are what I need. I have been vegan for a while and there are lots of vegan cookbooks out there but some add lots of sugar or fat and then they aren't healthy. This book is different.

I like it so far, but I do tend to "wing" a lot of recipes

Forewarning: I am neither a strict nutritarian nor anywhere close to being vegan. I am not overweight, but am trying to lose a few pounds I gained when I hit 40. That said...

I like this cookbook. I am the single working parent of an active preschooler. I want to eat more plant matter, but I can't take forever to cook things. This book is great for quicker meals (many take a while to cook but the hands on time isn't that much). I was able to wing a bunch of recipes pretty quickly, although I had a lot of veggies chopped and prepped from the weekend (I highly suggest doing that. It helps a ton).

So far, I have made the several recipes. I liked all of them. However, I should say that I do tend to make substitutions and change things around a little based on what I have on hand. This means that I occasionally add a little cream or a bit of chicken to an otherwise vegan recipe, and yes, I still cook with oil I want all the plant nutrients and benefits, but the phrase "water-sautee" just gives me the heebie-jeebies as much as the sound of the wooden spatula scraping the bottom of a watery pan does. Again, I'm not bent on losing weight - just on trying to get more whole veggies.

Here's what I've tried so far:

Green Lemonade (p 45) - Very good. I subbed baby spinach for kale because that's all I had. My son has been on a no-smoothie kick and also a Ghostbusters kick, so I nonchalantly began drinking this in front of him until he was intrigued and then I told him it was slime and he drank the whole rest of the cup. Hint: this does not taste like lemonade. It tastes like a citrusy green smoothie. But we both liked it.

Green Bean Salad with Lemon Basil Vinaigrette (p84) - I can't have almonds (they really jacked up my thyroid - yes, that can happen... woohoo almond milk) so I subbed cashews. No fresh basil, so I used dry. I ate the salad with the green beans still warm and I topped it with a little feta. The dressing was really good.- I had extra left over for several salads. My son doesn't like tomatoes all that much, so he ate green beans and snarfed down feta out of the open container. He did have several bites of the actual salad to make me happy and he didn't seem horribly offended by the taste.

Mexican Style Spaghetti Squash with Guacamole (p181) - I just made the whole recipe, except I didn't make spaghetti squash. I can't really get myself to like the stuff, probably based off the terrible trauma of my mom trying to trick me with it instead of actual spaghetti one day when I was a kid. I stuffed the guac/bean mixture in an Ezekiel sprouted grain tortilla and ate it that way. It was good. Then, I added salt, and it was better. But you're not supposed to do that. :D My son ate avocado and something unrelated to the book (I think some mac and cheese with a half gallon of mashed carrots blended into the cheese sauce).

Carrot and Red Lentil Soup (p121) - I followed this one pretty much to the letter and then I cracked and added tiny bit of cream to it. It was so thick it ended up being more like a sauce, so I poured it over some rice and both my son and I ate that for dinner. My son liked it when we were making it, and then he decided he wasn't sure, but he still ate it although he worked around the kale. Had I cut it up smaller, he wouldn't have complained on that. I liked it a lot. My dog licked to pot and he liked it, too. All were happy.

The weirdness: This book has great pictures, but sometimes you've got ingredients clearly pictured that aren't in the actual recipe. Like, one soup has big chunks of onion floating in the soup, but the ingredients called for minced, dried onion. It may, however, have magically rehydrated and expanded, but I'm not sure. A pomegranate salad calls for pomegranate juice but no actual pomegranate. The picture shows a salad full of pomegranate seeds. It was perplexing.

The ugly: Even if you think you eat a lot of fiber already, take it slow. I went from eating a lot of veggies and whole grains as it is to eating all of these meals in two days. To put it politely, I was quite sure I'd gotten the stomach flu. I might up the white rice for a while....

I am trying the Gingery Red Lentil Butternut Soup, the Mushroom Barley Soup, and the Kale and Bean Pasta relatively soon as I have all the ingredients. I may add chicken to the latter and maybe a tiny bit of bacon to the second one for flavor. Dr. Fuhrman does say you can do 10% non-compliance (and he doesn't push complete absence of animal products - there are non-vegan recipes in the book), so that's my 10%. I hope I'm not horribly offending anyone... for real.

I do most of my shopping at Aldi and I was able to get a lot of food there, but I did do Amazon Fresh delivery to my house to get a ton of vegetables I wanted last minute. Most of the ingredients are pretty easy to source at your local supermarket.

Anyway, good book of recipes and good flavors, though I can't vouch for the health aspects as I'm not really in it for that. Quite a lot you can turn into family recipes or kind of alter for your kids if they are open to trying things. Good luck and take it slow!
