The best book I have read this year

Whether you want to go to India or not, this book will take you there. Not the India of Bollywood or Disney, but a place with stark beauty that will make you want to jump on a plane to experience first hand, or just disappear deeply into the lush details of Mr. Benavav's exquisite writing. Traveling nomadic water buffalo herders on their annual migration from their winter to summer range high in the Himalyas, this forest dwelling family is faced with trials and tribulations most westerners can't even imagine. They attempt to preserve their generations old grazing rights from a national park program that seems to be well intentioned, but perhaps sadly misinformed. You will breathe in the diesel fumes from cars passing within inches of the sleeping family while they camp on the side of the highway during their journey through what seems to be a completely foreign landscape which simultaneously holds the potential for catastrophe and the opportunity to lounge in the sacred rivers of India and sunbathe while lying on a water buffalo's back. It seems that the lives of these nomads vacillate almost daily between heaven and hell, but their humor and love for their animals and one another transforms the journey into one of those books you read slowly at the end like letting a piece of dark chocolate melt in your mouth with your eyes closed to prolong the experience.
The photographs in the middle of the book are worthy of being displayed on your wall or in a museum. They will root your firmly into the places and connect you intimately with the people in this book. I found myself continually flipping forward and backward to connect a face with a person during the story, which adds dimension to the relationship Benavav cultivates for you with his words.
A word of warning, you may want finish the book when you have a moment to compose yourself after you are done. Life in India seems to be lived on the razor's edge, and it will cut right through the book and shake you awake from the sleepy ease most westerners take for granted. I washed the tears of my face only to them springing back from the gratitude of having running water.
Buy this book. It may carry you away from your troubles and you may fall in love with people you will never meet. It will change the way you look at your life. And it could make you start planning a trip to India.

Mercia Tapping was educated in the UK with degrees in Psychology and Education before coming to the US in 1973. Since then, she has enjoyed a career spanning some nearly 40 years as a college professor, clinical psychologist, workshop leader and inspirational speaker, consultant in organizational development to Fortune 500 companies, as well as being a serial entrepreneur, including founding AllergyBuyersClub.com. More recently, she has refocused some of her time to include writing and inspirational public speaking engagements. She seeks to inspire others about health related issues, as she has done in some form or another, her entire life. She writes daily inspirational quotes for her blog "OnlyOneLife.com" and can be seen on "FB/Only One Life: Don't Waste It" which is also the title of her book. The unifying purpose of her book, Facebook page and blog, is to inspire, and bring comfort and joy into the lives of others. Mercia was widowed in 2011 when her husband, Herman Lowe died of a brain tumor. She is a breast cancer survivor. She lives with her two Siamese cats in Plymouth, MA.

Inspiring

Authors who write suspense are told to place their characters in a happy, contented situation, and then pull the rug out from under them and throw stones at them.
Mercia Tapping has experienced this in her real life. Her husband contracted brain cancer, and nursing him through it was a heart rending and tragic time. After he had passed, Mercia found it hard to shake off the depression and find meaning in life again. Just as she thought the pall that hung over her was beginning to lift, she herself, discovered she had breast cancer.
Her book details the events after the diagnosis—and may serve as a reference and a comfort to other women who find themselves in the same situation.
She then discovered that a trusted employee had been stealing money from her business, which eventually led to financial ruin.
The only light in her live, was Jon Rivers, the wonderful man who nursed her through her darkest times. Was a new romance in the air?
Mercia’s spirit and intrepid positivity in the direst of circumstances is a model for anyone who has been through a tragedy. I highly recommend this story.

A Personal Story Written with Unflinching Honesty

This is a diary of a remarkable women. Mercia was hit in rapid succession with the long death of her husband from brain cancer, the decline of her successful business as she tended to her husband and the woes of the economic recession during which time she was diagnosed with breast cancer. As she struggled with the hospital trips for chemo and radiation her business continued to decline and her top financial person hid problems and stole money. The efforts of a trusted friend to manage the company on a part time basis and still more obfuscation forced her to sell the company for far less than it was once worth. As she turned the corner to recovery from her cancer she found herself poor and alone. But she kept a 'diary' of these years that became this book. It is strong stuff written with unflinching honesty about he pain but more about the kindness and generosity of special people she encountered on this journey --- the acts of love and gentleness. This is an inspirational diary.

I really enjoyed this book and found it hard to put it down. The author, Mercia Tapping, has lived through several major life challenges, any one of which might be anyone's undoing. But Mercia finds ways to cope, looking for silver linings, and finding bravery and gratitude for blessings that do come her way during almost relentless loss and pain. Her writing is very friendly and honest, like she and you, the reader, are good friends sitting together on the porch sharing coffee and conversation. Her writing style is also quite charming, a testament to her British upbringing. This book is a must read for anyone facing major challenges in life, especially breast cancer treatment. Highly recommended!
