About the Author
Leighton Ford is President of Leighton Ford Ministries, which seeks to help young leaders worldwide to lead more like Jesus and more to Jesus. For many years, Ford communicated Christ around the globe through speaking, writing and media outreach, addressing millions of people in thirty-seven countries on every continent. He served from 1955 until 1985 as Associate Evangelist and later Vice President of the Billy Graham Evangelistic Association and was featured as the alternate speaker to Billy Graham on the Hour of Decision broadcast. Ford describes his current mission to be "an artist of the soul and a friend on the journey." He served for nearly twenty years as chairman of the Lausanne Committee for World Evangelization, an international body of Christian leaders. He chairs the Sandy Ford Fund and has served as a board member for World Vision U. S., the Duke University Comprehensive Cancer Center, and Gordon-Conwell Theological Seminary. He received the 1990 Two Hungers Award, recognizing his contributions to addressing the physical and spiritual hungers of people around the world. In 1985 he was selected as Clergyman of the Year by Religious Heritage of America and TIME Magazine singled him out as being "among the most influential preachers of an active gospel." Excellent Biblically-Based Leadership Book!

Leighton Ford has written an excellent book for the Christian leader. Among the principles Ford covers include:
1. Treat others as people created by God, not things to be used.
2. A leader has a transcendant purpose and is not distracted from it.
3. The servant leader depends on God's timing and seeks to glorify God.
4. True leadership is marked by servanthood, not lordship over others.
5. Leaders will always face conlict, just like Jesus did.
6. Those who display toughness at all times probably lack inner security.
7. God is more interested in our character instead of our actions.
8. We need times alone with Christ to see if we are serving Him or self.
An excellent and highly recommended book for leaders and aspiring leaders (everyone is a leader in some way)!

Not bad, but....

First, I will say that this is the first book on viewing Jesus as a leader that I have read, and as such I may have been looking for something a little different. But that said, the book itself is not bad, it just seemed that the author used more words than necessary to make a simple point. There were times that he used the same scripture verse over again when he didn't need to; almost as if he had forgotten that it had been before earlier in the same or a previous chapter.

I will also say that, personally, I felt like there were too many liberalities taken by the author. His whole "interview with Peter" was nothing more than an indulgence for the author, and frankly it used a lot of speculative thinking about the "life and times of Jesus" that unfortunately placed unfair context Jesus.

Beyond that, though, the book overall isn't bad, but it did seem like the author could have pared it down a bit and not lost any ideas (in fact, there were several thoughts that got a little lost in the overabundant use of metaphors and anectodes). I did learn some things and appreciated the fact that the author was looking at Jesus through the lense of leadership with the premise being tranformation, not transaction.

Leadership Jesus' Way

Great Book! If you are a Christian Leader or plan to be on than this is the book for you. It will help keep you grounded and Kingdom minded. "Transforming" Leadership was recommended to me by the late Charles Colson when working with him at Breakpoints - The Centurion Program. The book teaches that it is a leaders job to do all they can to enable people "to achieve their fullest potential under God." "The true leader is never satisfied to leave his people where they are." A leader realizes that faith is an attitude of risk - based on evidence. A leader is also one who innovates. Innovators are the guys and gals willing to do the jobs that cannot be clearly defined. They are not afraid to step out in faith.
Jesus is who the book holds up as the prototype for Leadership. The Word tells us that Jesus rarely spent a day that did not deal with conflict to one degree or another so conflict and problems should not surprise of halt us. "Transforming Leadership" teaches us how to deal with obstacles as Christ did. Leighton Ford will walk you through the following leadership skills: strategist, seer, seeker, servant, struggler and sustainer.
This book is well worth your time. I loved it and found it easy to read and fascinating.

Beautiful, insightful and inspiring

There are lots of techniques, beautiful sketches and inspiration. Sketchers who find depicting architecture to be challenging should find this book accessible with all the simple drawing tips.

The book covers five areas, namely composition, the approach, perspective, color and viewpoints. It covers the what, how and where to draw. The text are accompanied by wonderful examples from prominent artists and sketchers, such as from James Richard, Nina Johansson, Shari Blaukopf, Ch'ng Kiah Kiean, Tia Boon Sim, and even the author Simone Ridyard herself, and many more. It's a delight to look at the different styles and beautiful renditions of scenes from around the world.

While there are no step-by-step instructions, the techniques explained are still easy to apply.

The book also has several spotlights on architectural styles, such as the different between columns, history of buildings and cities, roof profiles and other interesting architecture features. Also featured are selected iconic landmarks that are given a two-page spread treatment with contributions of art and text by several artists.

For those who want inspiration and techniques, this is the book to get. Highly recommended. It's a fantastic resource.

A book to help you make buildings come alive in your sketchbook

Filled with many different styles of urban sketching, Archisketcher – Drawing Buildings, Cities and Urban Landscapes has very little to do with drawing like an architect and everything to do with helping you make buildings come alive in your sketchbook. Its goal is not to teach you how to draw but to show a variety of approaches so that you can find and express your own.

The list of contributors reads like a who’s-who of contemporary urban sketching – Shari Blaukopf, Nina Johansson, Ch’ng Kiah Kiean, Suhita Shirodkar and Liz Steel are among the more than 40 artists worldwide – but my guess is that at least half are not architects, which I found inspiring in and of itself. “You don’t need to be an architect to sketch architecture confidently,” says the author in the introduction, and a quick scan of the book would tell you that’s true.

Focusing on composition, color, viewpoint and other aspects of architectural sketching, Archisketcher expands on each aspect by showing multiple examples. Each of the book’s five main sections ends with “Sketching an Icon,” in which sketches by several artists of the same well-known structure (such as Notre Dame or the Brooklyn Bridge) are shown together. I found it fascinating to see how sketchers take on the same subject in such varied ways. In addition, each section highlights two urban sketchers showing their home towns in “My Neighborhood.” Both of these unique selections of sketches are especially inspiring and enjoyable to savor again and again.

One other unique feature of Archisketcher is the author’s particular viewpoint as an architect, which is apparent in brief but illuminating sidebars to many sketches. Ridyard might comment on the historical significance of a Moorish tower appearing in Alvarao Carnicero’s sketch, for example, or how the roofline of a city becomes its signature. As someone who has never studied architecture, even casually, I really appreciate this context and the opportunity to view a sketch the way an architect might.

Other than brief lessons on one-point and two-point perspective, the book contains no how-to instructions or basics found in most urban sketching books (such as suggested art materials or portability tips). For those reasons, I wouldn’t necessarily recommend this book to a novice. Instead, I’d say its audience is sketchers who have a few years of sketching under their belts and are now looking for ways to step-up their architectural sketching level. Perhaps that group includes sketchers who are comfortable with most subjects, but architecture still intimidates them. I could also see experienced sketchers who are comfortable with architecture nonetheless being inspired by the wide variety of approaches shown that could get them out of a potential sketching rut. There’s something here for almost everyone – and definitely eye candy for all.

Colorful Gem

This is seriously good! The book size and feel are nice. The color is outstanding. The book is laid out very well. Every page is an "ooh ah" gem. There are no filler pages. For a practical workbook, this is more geared towards experienced sketchers. I just got the book, but so far, I have not seen beginner info. I did see use of a viewfinder. Most of the help is "general". "It's helps to have an understanding of architecture". In ways it is like a docent taking you on a museum tour and pointing out why the painting is so noteworthy. It is a WONDERFUL, remarkable book. I just want to make sure beginners realize they may not be able to take this book and run. If you are a beginner readin this, I would suggest you get also Urban Sketcher by Marc Taro Holmes. I actually bought these two together. He has plenty for the beginner. He also has two Craftsy classes right now. I highly recommend them as well as a blog.

A detailed book about how to organise special events

This book provides a range of useful techniques for those involved in organising special events, and is also useful for students. The book is in two sections, the first section is about the events business, the second, larger section, is about how to organise events.
The book has many features to help the reader prepare their own event, with useful forms for the beginner, lots of charts and diagrams, and a range of case studies from many countries.
The book contains helpful suggestions from real life events, especially from festivals, carnivals and tourism events. The book is easy to read, with clear language. The case studies give web addresses so the reader can look for more information on the net related to them.
The most useful thing about the book is that it is a good book for organisers and managers to have on their shelf.

Fantastic Skills Book!

Praise for Taylor's Skills book!

Having gone through nursing school (graduated May 2010 RN now), I was always annoyed at the lack of good skills books on the market. We had to use Potter and Perry through school. P & P wasn't a bad book per se, it was just TOO MUCH INFO! I know, I know, how can too much info be a bad thing? Well, when you fall asleep halfway through reading a skill, that's how. And the lack of pictures was annoying too. Enter Taylor's...fantastic! It is written in such a smooth manner, you will feel like someone is standing next to you, walking you through everything. It is up to date, there are a plethora of pictures, AND you get an access code to watch certain skills online! The layout is perfect, the pages are not paper thin like P & P, and it's a sturdy book. The only complaint I have is that the accompanying CD is bound in the inside front cover. The publisher should put it in the back in the future. You have to cut out the CD package to get the book to fully open up. Kind of annoying, but, that's really the only complaint I have. I am beyond pleased.

OK, but online videos are more helpful

This book is helpful and has good illustrations, but some skills or details of skills are missing or are not clear... but if anyone wants the video portion, you might want to try going to

LEARNERSTV look up nursing and medical. MANY excellent teaching skills videos.

Also, youtube has a lot of excellent videos... try HAWKNURSE channel

or NURSECENTRAL on youtube just to name a few.

There are about 152 videos there which are excellent and show similar techniques to the Taylor book. I had the Taylor text for classes, but would not highly recommend the videos as they tried to ad extra story lines and jokes and you really don't want to hear or see those when you are watching it for the second time or want just the facts in a straightforward way that won't distract or waste you precious time. The drama gets a bit tiring the second time around.

I used this text for my ASN from Excelsior College and could not have been happier. This text, along with the accompanying Clinical Skills Checklists Workbook, was invaluable to teaching clinical nursing skills needed to pass the CPNE.

I can honestly say that, not only were these two texts extremely useful during my training & education, but that I will use these texts to further clarify & develop my nursing skills.

So and so... it could have been better

I tried to be passionate about this book, got into a desire map book club, but ... it is not that insightful as the hype about it might lead you to believe.
What she did was taking this idea "what you are really looking for is a feeling" and made an entire book out of it. It could have been better.
This book is about the idea that when you set a goal, a purpose, you don't really want that thing but the feeling that it would give you, that "what you are really looking for is a feeling". I agree with that and it is all good until here. But that is all the insight that you get from the book.
The first part is full of quotes and a couple of stories from her life that she keeps repeating in all interviews about this book. The second part - the workbook is not deep enough to help you find your "core desired feelings" as she called them. The questions she asks in the workbook are superficial,not insightful enough and they do not guide you anywhere.
I think she put the workbook in this book just to fill the pages so that it would look more like a "book". Otherwise this "book" would have been a 20 page "booklet".
This is what I think after reading the book, listening to audios and all: repetitions, quotes and filling pages around that one idea of finding first how you want to feel, but not really helping you with this process.

The negative feedback is true… BUT…

I had wanted this book, but when I read the negative reviews I decided not to buy it. However, I still received it as a Christmas present and I’m glad I did.

You will read negative reviews about it being disorganized, and yes, it is. But deliciously so. Even though I’m your geeky over-planner goal-oriented step-by-step person, I really enjoyed reading this book.

There’s also a complain about the play of font sizes and how it’s difficult to read on Kindle. Yes, that’s true, to an extent. I didn’t find it difficult per se, it’s different. And I did enjoy the fact that some pages had huge font and I could pass them over quickly.

In the printed form it’s a design choice. I’m a designer and I enjoyed it thoroughly.

Look, if you really want to do the work, just get a notebook and do the exercises there.

They also complain that Danielle’s language is fake to make it more palatable. See, I see Danielle as a bit of a poet and it shows in her writing. So she builds weird sentences and adds too many periods and so what… That’s her style. I found it direct and soothing and entertaining. I could hear her voice in her words.

Also, there are lots of quotes from famous people… ok, yeah, I could do without all the quotes… but I just didn’t read them all.

They also complain that she packaged the content in a way that is convenient for her in terms of sales. Well, yeah!!! I mean… wouldn’t we all? She’s not forcing you to buy anything… and this book in itself is enough to apply all the concepts. You really don’t need to buy anything else… unless you want to. She’s a savvy business woman! And that’s a good thing!

In conclusion, (just like jazz), it ain’t for everybody. In my opinion the people who have left the negative reviews just are not ready for this kind of knowledge, it’s not their time, or it’s just not their style. And that’s fine.

You can expect this book to read exactly as Danielle speaks. Go to her YouTube channel and watch her speak. If you resonate with her, then buy the book.

I just finished my desire map and even though this year started with a lot on anxiousness, the book helped me to focus and now I know exactly what my plan for 2015 looks like.

Tried and tested it…call me a believer!

I purchased this book from Danielle LaPorte early in 2013 after seeing her in an interview. I was intrigued by the idea of creating a life and career around core desired feelings vs. the usual goal setting I've done in the past. So I sat down one weekend and read the whole book…easy, quick, casual read. I then jumped into the workbook portion, which was not an easy exercise for me because Danielle's questions were thought provoking, but eventually was able to whittle myself down to my core desired feelings. I set my yearly intentions. I also created my monthly check-in and have been doing the "This Week" sort of "to do list" toward those core desired feelings for almost a year now.

For me, I can easily say that it has clarified what I want out of life. No longer do I accept tasks/situations (work, volunteer, personal) that aren't aligned with my core desired feelings. This is not a cavalier way of being, but instead I truly know if something aligns with me before saying "yes" and no longer regret my choices when being a good employee or volunteer or daughter-in-law. My career has taken a HUGE turn for the better. My family life has become balanced in a way I never could have imagined and I am so much happier. I know this may not be for everyone, but if you want to be aligned with how you want to feel in life, this is the way to go.
