About the Author

Kenneth Chelst is a professor of operations research and director of engineering management programs in the Department of Industrial and Systems Engineering at Wayne State University. An Edelman Award finalist, he is also co-principal investigator of the NSF-funded Project MINDSET and a senior consultant for the International City and County Management Association. He earned a Ph.D. in operations research from MIT. His research interests include engineering management, emergency service management, global engineering, and the use of operations research to enhance K-12 mathematics education.

Yavuz Burak Canbolat is a senior manager in the Decision Support Group at Abbott Laboratories. He was previously an associate manager in decision analysis for Merck & Co., Inc., and an instructor in the Industrial Engineering Department at Qafqaz University. He earned a Ph.D. in industrial engineering from Wayne State University. His research interests include decision analysis and operations research techniques in R&D portfolio evaluation and management, strategic planning, financial and economic analysis, global operations and logistics, risk analysis, and capacity planning.

Excellent Content but digital version is not worth it.

I want to be impartial with this review.

Regarding the content, this book is really helpful to understand the key concepts in decision-making analysis. The examples are basic, simple but reach the point to illustrate scenarios and real situations. It is well-organized, and if you want to learn by yourself, this is an excellent starting point tool.
However, I bought the ebook version because I was moving out and just thinking about how much weight I have to carry and ship with my books, it drives me crazy. So, I decided to buy the digital version. Unfortunately, this version does not include the book's index, and If you are interested in download de decisionTools Suite package explained in Appendix A, you will not be able to download and activate the software, because you need some information located in the BOOK'S INDEX.
I think that this type of "missing" should be included in the specs of the digital version. I am really disappointed and felt deceived.

Essential Resource for Engineers & Managers

This is an outstanding book on decision and risk. In today's environment, engineers and managers need to comprehensively understand the impact of their decisions. Today's decisions are far more complex than simply "yes or no". There are multiple considerations attached to any decision and the fact that not all risk is weighted equally is critical, especially in the case of multiple objectives.

The real-life examples included in the text make the concepts easy to understand. The chapter on ethical decisions reminds managers that reputation matters and the common good cannot be overlooked.

The only thing better than this book are Dr. Chelst's classes at Wayne State University. The text reflects his use of humor to illustrate complex topics. In short, this book is an essential resource for all engineers and managers.

Why are the editing controls so poor.

I am a decision practioner and it is really rare to get a good concise book on decision theory.

Pros:

The book is well laid out and topics are explained clearly and concisely. Good for both graduate level courses and real life practical implementations.

Cons:

Editing - Editing - Editing... The work examples need to be correct. A book costing $125 should have outstanding editing and quality review processes.

Example: Page 129
Ut(11.1) = (0 - 11.1) / (0 - 12) = 0.075 */ the equation was not derived correctly it should have read

Overall:
Too many errors in the examples spoil this book....
If you don't take the examples at face value and work through the problems yourself then the book is GREAT..
Not worth the price due to the lack of proof reading.

Interesting but probably poorly understood by executives

A bit repetitive at times, perhaps because the author didn't have permission to discuss a lot of different client projects. I came away thinking that observational research (which includes interactions with consumers - not just watching them) is a sophisticated research and planning activity that only the most advanced corporations (e.g., General Mills, Xerox, Hallmark, P&G, Toyota) understand and hire for (or maybe they use their own in-house experts, something that Abrams discourages). I would also expect that it takes a lot of training and experience for someone to do this without unintentionally influencing the study - although Abrams reinforces the point that this is subjective and qualitative - and that is part of it's value. Sure seems like if a observational researcher can do this well, they could discover things that could change an entire industry (like the Palm Pilot or the Chrysler Mini-Van). Overall, I found the book to be "okay," the method itself - potentially ground-breaking.

Actionable Advice Dispensed in a 1-on-1 Conversational Format.

I began reading this book several months ago, only to stop because I could not accept a truth the author revealed. The truth is that women are not perfect little angels, as we're socialized to believe. I wasn't able to accept that women CAN and WILL seek her pleasures just as men will. "Can I get an Amen?" - Or more appropriately, "Welcome to the real world?"

I began reading this book and could not stop because the advice this brilliant author dispenses is golden. Some of this advice could be declared a no-brainer. But if a given piece of advice is common sense then why wasn't I following it? This book provided the answers to that very question. Therefore, do not be discouraged by what seems to be familiar and "common sense" and focus on the information that explains WHY you've not practiced this advice.

Here's an example: Your checking account frowns after a few dates and you've no good "memories" to justify it. Deep down you know you're a sucker, yet you continue to overspend. Common sense would dictate that you cease this behavior but you continue because it's approval that you seek. That last sentence tells you EXACTLY where the problem resides. And it's these kinds of revelations that make this book indispensable to men who ponder about where he's going wrong.

At the risk of making this title sound like just another "self-help" recording, it advises men to build value in about them and to be authentic. There are no cheesy pick-up lines to memorize. The book is packed with information that most of us are not aware of as well. An example of such information is how to compliment a woman and have her know she's truly won YOUR approval, and not the other way around! We totally muck this up, fellas.

Oh and one more thing, a superb complement to this book is the title: "The Rationale Male" by Rollo Tomassi. But be warned, you will have your socialization "hard drive" wiped clean. I cursed Rollo's name for revealing the truth about women. It was his book that led me to purchase this one which is why I could not read at this one for a brief period. Mr. Alexander's book teaches us how to be more successful with women as I described above. But Rollo Tomassi's book: "The Rational Male" goes into great detail on women and society which corroborates the advice in this book.

Where ever you are tonight Mr. Alexander, I offer a handshake and hearty "thank you" for a frank and well- written book.

An excellent book

First of all,while other books and pick up artists more or less teach you to make up stories about yourself to get women interested,John Alexander teaches you to BECOME instead of making it up.He encourages you to make your own life exciting and happy,so that you will naturally have great stuff to talk about with women.I like his book because he is realistic in his approach.

In fact,he does not recommend one tries scripted routines unless one can deliver it well.The Alpha male is one who makes himself happy,who has things going on in his life.That is what I have gathered so far.I tried one of his suggestions for an opener and it had the girl talking back to me .I was like WOW!.lol

Guys,buy the book and study it.Women out there ARE sociable and friendly and willing to talk with you. You only need to break the ice and let it flow.

The book is also about building up your self esteem,which comes back to having stuff in your life to keep you engaged. Do not for a second think there is some fantastic line that will make a girl like you instantly. But as the book shows, by improving yourself,instead of just being yourself,you stand a better chance,though it is not guaranteed.

John teaches that women must only be a source of fun in your life,and not your priority in life. I also recommend SoSuave.com for further info.

He teaches you how to get in shape if you are slave to fitness and about how to look good.He also gives general advice on building a social circle.

Imo,all the stuff written by dating guides are really opinions from different perspectives and all these guys are competing for a final answer on how to make love possible. But this will always exist because each woman is different and challenges a guy in a different way.John is the first I have come across who does not tell you to fake anything or pretend to be who you are not.I love that about him.This book in essence is about inner game,or in one word-CONFIDENCE. If one girl dont like you,whatever,move on to someone else.

Some dating coaches tell you to have an opener plus a few stories to tell which women find interesting,and they give you made up stuff.The problem is that during the course of your date,you will eventually run out of "lines" to say and she is gonna see the real you.So John gives the answer ,for you to live an exciting life yourself so you will have stories to tell.No faking,no gimmicks,no tricks.

Again he is real,and that is the best part about his book

So,all I can say is do not look for a magic formula in the book that will seduce any woman,you won't get that. The book is about attitude towards yourself,the woman of your choice,and self confidence.

Buy it,and read it. It's well worth your time guys.

Really Solid Book on Building Confidence and More

I got so much out of this book that I'm actually bothering to write a review. After reading the negative reviews of this book, it is obvious to me that these people did not read the book.

This book does not give you routines or jokes or other attention grabbing gimmicks to attract women. In fact, a large portion of the book isn't even about women. It's about YOU. The author helps the reader identify and challenge negative thoughts and behavior. He then goes on to give you some tools on how to become a more positive and happy person. Attracting women is just one of the many benefits of becoming a more confident and engaging person.

I've read some pick up books by other authors and they are all "externally" focused. What I mean is that the material in those books teach you how to "perform" for an audience and demonstrate attractive qualities. But what happens after you get the number? Or, when you get her home? Are you going to keep performing? Performing is exhausting! You just want to be yourself and be liked for being yourself. This book is about being your BEST self. Most of the changes he asks you to make are reasonable and modest: work out, take care of yourself, dress well. But the big thing he wants you to do is to be able to reframe your thoughts. This kind of positive thinking and positive visualization has been covered for decades in hundreds of books by authors from Napoleon Hill to Tony Robbins...and it works! I agree with some of the criticism of this book that the author doesn't really cover new ground in that respect. However, that doesn't detract from the power of the material. If you're a guy who is good with women now, this book is probably not for you. But, if you're a "nice guy" who wants to have more options and choices when dating, this book will benefit you.

In one respect, the author does cover some new ground. (At least for me, anyway.) As I mentioned before, what do you do when you get the number? What do you do when you get her alone? What do you do when you get her back to your place? He spells it all out in detail. It comes across as very practical advice from that cool uncle of yours who has been out in the dating trenches and made all the mistakes so you don't have to. It doesn't hurt to have a good idea of how a seduction plays out. Being prepared makes you relaxed and confident and confidence is sexy. Women are always making fun of guys who can't seduce. How refreshing would it be for her to be with a man who knows how to take charge and make her feel comfortable and sexy so she can be her natural, feminine self?

In conclusion, this is a very solid book on Inner Game that also has lots of practical pointers on how to be more suave.

This is a Fantastic Book

The book is a soft cover, good quality and comes with a CD. Each chapter has outlines and objectives so you can prepare and focus for chapter tests. The text/font is a good size, easy to read and the pages are also of good quality and not cheap or thin. The illustrations are clearly explained with the proper locations of the parts. They also have photographs of real affected areas of the body, which I found to be somewhat gross, but that's how good the pictures are! I am not a medical student but I am studying for medical coding and I found some of the pictures, well, a bit "surprising". I didn't expect to see real pictures of skin diseases, lacerations etc., but I guess this gives students a better understanding of human anatomy. Aside from my shying away (at first) from some of the graphic photographs, it is a well written book that is easy to read, follow, and comprehend.

Very Good Book, but pertains more toward the Prehistoric Age

like I said, good book, but a bit outdated. The author talks about 50 MByte disk drives as being huge and about 5 inch floppy disks. This is like reading Aristotle's physics instead of Newton's. If you use DOS it will help you of course, but ignore most of the talk about hardware. Covers DOS commands very well. Contains interesting trivia about computers too (the life span of a hard drive is about 4 years, unless this is outdated too). To conclude, if you use DOS, it will suite you. Even better seem to be the DOS reference book for Dummies.

Every Page Another Stupid Joke

The concept in the "...for Dummies" series is to write in a friendly style and give the reader some substantial information along the way. What you get in this waste of paper is tons of useless unfunny attempts at humor with some passing references to DOS along the way.

Most of his book is just padding, and you get maybe one useful sentence per page. After reading it for awhile, I started to notice the phrase, "go talk to an expert to get this done..." popping up again and again. Well... I buy a how-to book in order to learn something new. I already know that I can pay to have an expert do just about anything for me. The writer telling me to just "go consult an expert" defeats the reason for buying a how-to book.

Save your money and buy something else.

The dummy books are the "cliff notes" of computing.

-----DOS for dummies is the most helpful computer guide I
have ever laid my brown eyes apon. It has everything from
turning on the computer to editing you configuration files.
It has several jokes about PC's and even some cartoons!
Whether you just got your computer yesterday or you MAKE
computers this book is helpful. In the front it has some
cheat sheets and quick refrence guides that are really
helpful. I have had this book for 2 years now and still
find myself reading it.

-----So even if you don't plan on spending time in DOS
(which you always end up doing anyways) GET THIS BOOK!!!!

Terribly disappointing.

I really wanted to like this book, but there are some things that just can't be ignored:

1) Perspective changes WAAAAAAY too much. In one chapter, the perspective (and point-of-view) changed 21 times. Sometimes you're with this character, sometimes with that character, and then a 3rd, 4th, and 5th character. Sometimes you're in first person, sometimes you're in 3rd person.

Connie, pick 1 or 2 characters to follow and a single point-of-view. The constant hopping is disorienting and breaks the flow of the story.

2) While I don't begrudge a female character having multiple lovers, what's going on with Quin is just silly. By the end of the book she has so many male consorts that I lost count of exactly how many there were. I THINK she was up to 8 or 9 at the end.

It's like every male character that happens to cross her path is instantly in love with her. Seriously, there are some characters that have been exposed to her for all of a couple days and they're referring to her as "my love." Too, NONE of them are upset with the fact that there's a basketball team worth of other guys lining up for her time.

To add to the ridiculousness, at the beginning of the book, Quin is thrown 5 years into the future. After 5 years, not a single one of her male harem sought to find another woman? Not even the 16 (now 21) year old kid? Really? None of them have so much as had sex with the girl, but they're going to put their lives on hold because they're so distraught?

3) There are character with god-like powers and 1000's of years of experience that are completely ineffectual and are utterly useless when it comes to making a plan. They have space ships that can be transported anywhere in the universe on a whim, but they can't get a spy satellite, a spy network, or long-range surveillance on various worlds? Their spies only observe a single city on a planet. Really?

4) Quin is a complete wuss. I'm all about a female character having some vulnerability. It's a pet peeve of mine how many writers have a young girl as the protagonist and make her supremely capable despite lacking experience and education. However, Quin is a blubbering, whiny, cry baby. She's constantly feinting, crying, crawling in laps for comfort, or looking for someone to cheer her up.

5) Everything revolves around Quin. It's annoying. Yes, she's supposed to be the main character, but all the supporting characters, including several royalty, are constantly looking out for her, comforting her, and generally being hyper-protective.

Not like the previous books.

I found it hard to like this last book. All of a sudden it's packed with more characters than you can keep track of and places you have to try to remember from prior chapters. It just got ridiculous. That and she takes pretty much every male character as her lover then gets upset when one of her lovers has to marry two others. I loved the first two books and was anxious for this. I little let down, honestly.

A Sequel for the Sake of a Longer Series. Pure Filler.

I give the first installment Finder 5 stars. 3-4 stars for the second installment Keeper. But this one is simply disappointing. In the first book, Quin or "Finder" is an impressive character in her own right, not absurdly powerful, and a complex character. She isn't defined by romantic relationships. The world building is also good in Book 1.

But the BLACKWING installment is even worse than the second. This book is pure filler. She has a ridiculous amount of lovers. I don't really care that she's not in a traditional relationship - it's just taking up too much space and feels "forced and fake and stupidly convenient." Her powers are always growing, but we don't get any answers to the mystery behind her creations. Only more and more assumptions and more questions. I forced myself to read the first half diligently, but I only skimmed the second half and read any parts that seemed relevant. Too disappointing.

More importantly than anything, this book does not feel connected to the first 2. There are simply way too many new characters, too many new worlds, too many this, too many that, etc etc. Characters are barely given enough page time, and too many are given their own POVs when we don't even care about them. How could we properly care about any of these characters when so many new ones are shoved it every few pages?? I have no attachment to them. Quin herself has regressed a lot. She's whiner and crybaby who suddenly needs to be consoled all the time. She faints or becomes overwhelmingly distressed very frequently.

So much of what made Finder such a great book is absent in this one. This is a common problem with many book series. However, where this series is WORSE than others is that it lacks a sense of "connected-ness." It just doesn't "feel" like it belongs with the other two.

This was a sequel for the sake of continuing the series. The real story begun (and somewhat continued in Book 2) does not feel like it's progressed at all. Readers will be led on, hoping to find answers only to be disappointed. Whatever the next installment focuses on, I won't bother to read it.

Taught Me to Train the Dog!

It Works! We watch the television show, Lucky Dog, and have used some of the training tips with our dog. After reading the book, which provided much more information and background stories, we have made much-needed headway with our dog's out-of-control barking. I would be driven to distraction when the dog would bark at visitors or noises. Now, I understand that barking is in his DNA and I can stop him from barking, but he will always bark. It took an enormous weight off my shoulders; I am a responsible dog owner and can do what is best for the dog. The book is interesting and moves right along. Having watched most dog related TV shows, this book has taught me that I don't need the trainer in my house to do the training as I formerly believed . I can do it myself which is great for the dog and my ego as well!

The Key Ingredient In Training A Dog Is Building Trust

LUCKY DOG LESSONS is not just a book on how to train your dog. Of course, it's that, but it's also a call to be sensitive to the plight of neglected and abused dogs. LUCKY DOG LESSONS is filled with stories of how Brandon personally intervened and rescued abused dogs left in shelters. He is really passionate about saving these neglected dogs whenever he can: "This year alone, nearly four million dogs will go into animal shelters, and more than a quarter of those dogs will never come out."

The author makes a plea to the reader to have compassion on our canine friends: "Make sure these amazing animals find a purpose, a family, and a place to call home." Toward that end, each chapter contains a short "Meet the dog" bio on a dog rescued from a shelter.

The author offers a handy summary of his 7-day approach:

1. 7 Days Is a Great Start.
2. Breed Matters.
3. Training Is Not Dominating.
4. You’re the Teacher; Play the Part.
5. Let Your Dog Know What He’s Doing Right.
6. Training Is a Daily Diet.
7. Any Dog Can Be a Lucky Dog.

The key ingredient in training a dog is building trust. So, take time to build a bond. One good way to do this is to exercise with your pet. These are the keys to building trust:

1. Be Calm.
2. Be Patient.
3. Be Understanding.
4. Be Consistent.
5. Be Reassuring.
6. Be a Friend.

For me, one great takeaway from LUCKY DOG LESSONS is the suggestion for training tools--especially the "Penny Bottle." I remember seeing this idea in other books, but it was good to be reminded of this tool. The author refers to the Penny Bottle often: "I swear by the penny bottle and recommend it to pretty much everyone I know. . .The reason it works is almost too simple: dogs get startled by the sound it makes. It literally stops them in their tracks when they’re behaving badly."

Do you have a dog who jumps up? Ours does that sometimes, and Brandon offers some ideas for stopping that. The first one is simply, "Turn Your Back." What?? I never thought of that. When Fido jumps up, "say the word OFF in your firmest voice and turn your back." A second method is called "Hold Those Paws." Again, another idea I never thought of.

I found the chapter on "Fence Barking" helpful, since our border collie loves to bark at neighbors across the fence (he especially hates weed-whackers.) Out comes the penny bottle: "When your dog starts barking at the fence, walk toward him, give a firm NO or QUIET, then briskly shake the penny bottle for a few seconds and follow that up by repeating the command again."

Chapter 18 is a deadly serious chapter. If you have an aggressive dog, take time to carefully read this chapter. The author emphasizes that curing aggression is NOT a 7-Day Project. Brandon describes his experience with a surprisingly dangerous dog named "Odin." He was fast and dangerous (the dog, I mean, not Brandon): "Odin lit up, grabbing me with enough force to nearly rip my arm out of its socket...Even with the protection of the sleeve, I was black and blue for a month after that meet and greet. This dog meant business." I found Chapter 18 a very serious read.

All in all, I found LUCKY DOG LESSONS to be a well-written, practical book. Besides the useful training ideas, I appreciate the author's passion in fostering kindness to these animals. Brandon appeals to the reader in a final plea: "If each of us contributes in some small way—by rescuing a dog, fostering a dog, volunteering to help train a dog, or donating to feed and house one a little while longer—we can save the next Bruno or Skye or Lulu who comes along. One dog at a time."

Nicely said.

I am using Brandon's techniques to train a shelter dog with separation anxiety. Brandon's explanation of the seriousness of the condition and the practical steps that he outlines to train the dog are simple, useful, and practical.
