An amazing, emotional book that anyone can relate to. I wasn't sure about a YA novel after writing children's books but Chris Colfer doesn't disappoint. I laughed, I cried, I got mad.... My YA daughter read the book and said "mom, he totally gets it" Awesome book by an amazing author. Highly recommend

Beautiful Story with Shaky Storytelling

It makes me sad to give it so few stars, but there were some things I couldn't get passed. As with all of Mr. Colfer's stories, and I have read them all, the plot and characters and phenomenal, the writing, not as much. I hate to say things like that, but the only novel he has written that I think was absolutely amazing was his other YA novel Struck by Lightning. It was his first and best book. But back to Stranger than Fanfiction. Colfer has a tendency to overuse strange metaphors which would be enjoyable in small doses but are annoying and overbearing on every page. He also tends to overwrite. While he has thought of a simply beautiful story with affecting characters who are complex and feel human, it is flimsily thrown together by thin threads. There were some scenes that were emotional, almost moving to tears, and some that I was highly impressed with, but overall I expected more from this book as the writing had improved in each Land of Stories book, and his last YA was so good. Also, another word of warning, this book, no matter how badly young Chris Colfer fans of his children's series want to read this, it deals with a wide range of sensitive topics and issues that young kids might not fully grasp and comprehend. Not to mention some words that they should not repeat. Great for teenage and up. Worth reading for the beautiful story about some unique characters, but not the flowing prose I had envisioned.
