Seventy-eight-year-old pianist, vocalist and jazz impresario Wein is one of the key figures responsible for polishing jazz's image, as he charted new directions and gained respect for the music by creating such vibrant venues as the Newport Jazz Festival. While doing so, Wein, who is white, also confronted and helped change the face of racist America. Wein and Chinen present the story of a 50-year career with smooth transitions, mellow flow and continuity. From his Boston beginnings as a teenage professional pianist and his WWII experiences, Wein segues into his postwar nightly gigs and college graduation. In 1950, he opened a Boston jazz club, Storyville, and soon launched a record label. But why jazz amid Newport's bygone Gilded Age architecture? It began with wealthy Elaine Lorillard's 1953 comment to Wein, "Oh, it's terribly boring in the summer. There's just nothing to do." Wein recalls, "I didn't even know what a jazz festival would consist of.... I had no rule book to go by." He juxtaposes his memories of early Newport triumphs, conflicts, disasters and riots with source material. These recollections bring the central core of the book to a crescendo, along with backward glances at other festivals, including New Orleans's JazzFest, where the "long-lost career" of Professor Longhair, a forgotten founding father of Big Easy R&B, skyrocketed after Wein brought him back from total obscurity in 1971. Wein's experiences with musicians, from Miles to Mingus, make this an important, valuable addition to the jazz history shelf. It's a fact-filled, melodic memoir, swinging with emotion and energy. The Father of all Music Festivals Speaks

George Wein has blessed music lovers by utilizing his God-given business acumen to influence the way live music is presented. He has blessed us again with this warm and well written memoir that contains a wealth of anecdotes regarding a who's who in American music in the later haalf of the 20th century. George Wein started out as a jazz pianist but his exposure to so many legendary jazz performers brought him to the realization that his talent for the business side of music may have exceeded his actual musical ability. He devoted himself to promoting jazz performances and performers ultimately becoming the driving force behind the famed Newport Jazz Festival. Along the way he has countless stories to share regarding the great legends of jazz with whom he became acquainted. Branching out to promote folk music festivals and having some intersting experiences with the newly emerging Rock culture , George adapted his approach and enjoyed some additional successes. The book includes characters such as Ellington, Basie, Armstrong, Monk, Coltrane, Bob Dylan, Pete Seeger, Joni Mitchell, James Taylor, etc, etc.

This is a very entertaining book for music lovers of all stripes but will have special significance for the jazz lover since George Wein is clearly a jazz lover and speaks the language. A great book.

A Jazzy Trip Down Memory Lane

I'm only up to page 128 in this wonderful book but am already completely enthralled. As Nat Hentoff said, "He has known more musicians-some very well indeed-than any writer on jazz, and he certainly knows the business end." To read personal accounts of his relationships and experiences with almost every jazz legend I've ever heard of (and some from before my time as well) is mesmerizing. And George Wein's personal life outside of jazz is not exactly "chopped liver" either!! The book is written with a wealth of knowledge, intelligence, insight, warmth, humor and humility. The only criticism I have is that the book is only a little over 500 pages!!

I just finished reading "Myself Among Others" by George Wein. This is the best book on Jazz I ever read. Politics, craziness, love, trust, friendship, race relations... are all inside by a major insider.
I even learned things I did not want to know about my idols. That is a must read book for anyone who has any warm corner in his heart for the "classical music of America."

Who is in control?

Wendell Wallach is the go-to person for informed and level-headed insights and ideas about the contemporary technological condition of humanity. For the last decade I have had the privilege of sitting in on his working group at Yale’s Interdisciplinary Bioethics Center and observing his tireless efforts to address every facet of our sociotechnical situation. Scores of experts, recruited by Wallach on his continual travels to conferences in the U.S. and abroad, have introduced us to the marvels and dangers, the dreams and realities, the problems and possible solutions engendered by the ever more rapidly proliferating products of science and engineering. This book represents the full flowering of Wallach’s project.

What is distinctive about “A Dangerous Master” is not only its comprehensive survey of such a vast terrain, but also its critical take on the risks and speculations that surround this topic. On the one hand Wallach does surely want to stress the omnipresent hazards that lurk in every corner of this brave new world. On the other hand he wants to bring our thinking about them down to earth by separating science-fiction-and-film-fueled myth from laboratory fact.

By this means Wallach wants to impress upon us that we humans still can be, and should be, in control. We need not, and should not, surrender to a supposed inevitability of machine dominance, not to mention, transformation of our very nature into something machine-like. No matter how magical the prospect seems to some (I will never forget the moment in one of our meetings when the speaker’s mention of technological magic moved several of us to reach into pocket or purse and hold up our new smartphone for the group’s awed admiration), or dystopian to others, neither the state of the art (and science) nor the inherent complexity of the issues need reduce us to ineffectual indulgence in fantasy or else utter hopelessness.

To this end Wallach highlights the notion of an inflection point, which is a brief interval at the cusp of a new development, in this case technological, where a real opportunity exists for society to assess and affect that development, sometimes even unto halting it in its tracks if it is deemed too dangerous. The book gives a case study of Wallach’s attempt to seize such a moment that now exists for the creation and global dispersal of autonomous weapons. At the same time Wallach does not want society to squelch promising and even essential new technologies due to unwarranted fears.

The book concludes with various practical suggestions for how humanity might try to achieve wise governance of our mechanical creations so that they will remain our “good servants” rather than become our “dangerous masters.”

An Illuminating Read

Despite the many benefits realized from emerging technologies, one becomes increasingly fearful of its more sinister aspects. From the media's relentless (complicit?) coverage of ISIS - a movement that essentially owes its global awareness ascension to social media - to the international race to see who can best whom in the world of hacking one another's most private information, it is easy for those of us less technology-inclined to feel pawns in an increasingly dangerous technology-driven world. In his most recent book, A Dangerous Master, author and ethicist Wendell Wallach educates readers on the accelerating momentum of technology accompanied in far too many cases by the disturbing lack of discourse beforehand concerning possible negative repercussions associated with its adaptation. Modern society, it seems, places a higher value on the continuous and rapid introduction of new technologies at the expense of having to deal after the fact with any negative consequences. According to Wallach; "Unfortunately, being seen as active during an actual crisis carries more weight with the chattering classes than having staved off a crisis that never develops." Wallach discusses a broad range of leading-edge technologies and their inevitable impact on all of us with sensitivity and clarity. This techno-neophyte found A Dangerous Master illuminating, if not comforting.

Serious Questions About Our Future in a World of Rapid and Complex Technological Change - We Ignore Them At Our Peril

Google, Facebook, Microsoft, and Baidu, among others, are hiring artificial intelligence researchers at an unprecedented rate - putting hundreds of millions into a race for better algorithms and smarter computers. Some scientific and technology luminaries (eg. Bill Gates, Stephen Hawking, Elon Musk, Steve Wozniak, have expressed considerable concern over where rapid advances in AI will take us. Fear of mass-produced Terminators, genetically-modified human embryos, self-driving cars, killer robots, uncontrollable emerging viruses, allowing humans to live to 150, etc. are becoming public more frequently.

Author Wallach's first example is that of the Large Hadron Collider (LHC). Prior to its startup, several knowledgeable scientists warned of the possibility it would create a tiny black hole into which Earth would disappear. Previously physicists working on the Manhattan Project worried that atomic bombs could set off a chain reaction in the earth's atmosphere - ending human life. Wallach's point is not that these predictions did not occur (actually, some scientists warn the LHC disaster may yet occur, but that these risks are appearing in more and more areas of endeavor and that it is also becoming increasingly difficult to objectively evaluate them because of their often probabilistic nature, occurring on the frontiers of science where clear answers are not available, and the invariable self-interests of involved individuals and entities. Potential economic and social order disasters may await in a world in which robots do almost all the work. Recent natural disasters (the Spanish Flu epidemic of 1918 and, a new strain of swine flu in 2009, along with man-made disasters (eg. thalidomide, Vioxx, Chernobyl, Union Carbide's Bhopal leak, the 2010 NYSE 'flash crash,' aerosol spray CFCs, and the growing threat to infrastructure posed by hackers. Geoengineering will become increasingly attractive as Global Warming progresses - and the risk of disastrous unexpected results.

Regulations offer a theoretical defense - but examination quickly exposes that defense as a chimera. Not only for reasons of complexity, unknown interactions, reaching tipping points, and vested interests, but also because of the increasing ease for DIY malefactors to operate and a political environment turning more and more against regulation.

Bottom-Line: 'A Dangerous Master' raises important points and offers credible prior examples. However, the book should have been condensed into an article.

Used this book at Western Washington University around 2008. I found this book difficult to follow - not sure if it was the book itself or the class structure; probably a combination of both.

As a university textbook, this was useless

This book covers somewhat modern Chinese, Japanese, Korean, and Vietnamese history.

I was required to read and use this textbook during an East Asian class in college. I did use the book for the class at the beginning, but after a while I determined that the content was poorly organized and poorly detailed. The book is probably more suitable for students who just like a supplemental textbook to savor their East Asian history needs. Maybe this opinion of the book was a result of my professor's course syllabus, but I believe that it is not very well written for mainstream use.

About the Author
Francis O'Gorman is from English, Irish, and Hungarian families and was educated at the University of Oxford as Organ Scholar of Lady Margaret Hall. He has written or edited twenty books, mostly on English literature, and his many essays discuss literature, mental health, music, and the state of the modern university. His most recent piece of creative non-fiction is a memoir, Forgetfulness (2016). He is a Professor in the School of English at the University of Leeds, UK.

Worriers read on- you have much self-understanding to pleasurably gain

In his introduction to this book Francis O'Gorman describes a number of systematic theoretical approaches to the subject which he refrains from using. Instead he tells us that he is going to grope his way to an understand of a very commonplace and common reality which a great share of humanity lives and suffers with.
As a great worrier myself I appreciate very much the attention he gives, and the insight he has on the subject. Take one thing which has always bothered me. Perhaps it is because I am a traditional religious person. But I am always worried that if I do not worry the thing I do not worry about will happen. O'Gorman explains that this kind of need to worry as a kind of sacrificial payment to prevent the thing worried about from happening is also most commonplace. Worriers worry that if they do not worry they will be punished for not worrying.
Worriers as we all know also waste enormous amounts of time tormenting themselves and others with needless worries. They also often discover problems which others ignore. Worry can also help.
This is a book which I believe will help most readers better understand ourselves.

You are not alone, worrier!

This book is perfect for everyone that worries.

It overs the perfect perspective of how people that are constantly worries always find the "but" in any situation, and showcases that no matter where you are and at what time of history you live in, worrying is always there and present.

This book is interesting and fantastically written, offers a nice view and annectoes and stories about worrying and how -in a way- it connects us all no matter who you are and where you are coming from.

If you are someone that worries -and is there really anyone that doesn't?- read this book. And find funny moments, honest moments, and just an interesting view on what worrying is and how you are just a small part of a big history.

I got a fever, and the only prescription, is more Twinkle Twinkle!

I am an Adult learner just starting, and after buying this book at my instructors advice, I am a Twinkle Twinkle little star MASTER!!! I can play it all kinds of ways man, just trust me, it is so freaking awesome! You can keep your Mozart and Beethoven, give me some more of that Twinkle Twinkle stuff! Buy this book, and you'll see what I'm talking about. But for real, this is a very awesome book, but just know you will definitely want an instructor, it's not self explanatory, and you'll need someone to give you the tabs and show you techniques. Absolutely get the version with the audio cd, I can't imagine trying to practice at home without it. Great buy.

Impossible to use for performance

I was SO excited when I saw that the Suzuki books/accompaniments were available for Kindle (I have the Kindle app for iPad). However, I just downloaded this, and the staves are chopped into so many oddly proportioned groups that it's impossible to use for performance. For instance, the first page of Twinkle Variation A only includes the first two staves. In the printed book, all four staves are on one page, so no page turning is required. If I were to play through all the Twinkle variations using the Kindle edition, I would need to turn the page (or swipe the screen) seven times! Way too awkward.

I realize that it's probably chopped up like that to accommodate the smaller Kindle screen. So if you're looking to buy this for reference only, it will work perfectly fine. However, if you want to use it for performance purposes, it won't help you. I gave two stars because it's so awkward to use. :(

If anyone reads this who can re-edit the Kindle edition to fit the staves on the screen just like the printed book, please consider it! I would happily download ALL the series if it was arranged that way!

Great supplement for home practice, and the CD is great!

My 7 year old just started violin lessons for the first time. Her lessons are from a Suzuki teacher, who recommended this book to assist with practicing at home (since there's only one 30-minute lesson per week). The book starts by introducing learners to the parts of the violin and eventually ends with some good, beginner songs. Her teacher said that students can take anywhere from 1-3 years to work through this book, depending on various factors. For $15, it's an excellent supplement to what the teacher offers!

I also appreciate the CD that comes with the book. The teacher mentioned how the Suzuki method is big on training the ear. Violin students need to be able to hear themselves and know if they are playing correctly. That can only come by listening to the songs as they are being played correctly. We listen to this CD many evenings during dinner. It makes for nice background music during dinner time, and my daughter is also learning what the songs are supposed to sound like, which is helping to "train" her ear. I thought it was a bit weird at first to realize there is also a piano playing with the violin in the CD. However, I quickly realized that musicians seldom have solos. They need to know how to play with others, so the piano is helping to train her ear as well.

I loved this book

I loved this book. It was an incredibly exciting, liberating reading experience.

Solosexual is an account of one man’s discovery of his love of masturbation above all other forms of sexual activity. Instead of isolating him, his solosexuality leads him to a community of fervent, dedicated masturbators like himself. The sexual descriptions here are no-holds barred, but the book isn’t exhibitionist. It’s just incredibly honest, and very moving in places too. And as with any good treatment of a very specific subject, Solosexual opens up a much greater universal theme. Armstrong is so courageous and candid in his accounts of his own masturbatory experiences that you can’t help but relate to him and think of your own sexuality.

The more Armstrong shared his desires in the book the more I was considering my own fantasies and how I could explore them through long, slow sessions of masturbation. He talks a lot about self-love and I realized I was neglecting a huge part of my sexuality by not finding the time and privacy to take pleasure in my own body and desires.

The book makes for an incredibly sexy read for a gay male. But because of that universal theme and the way it puts you in touch with your own desires, I would recommend this book to anyone—gay, straight, male, and female. Solosexual is ultimately about the potential we all hold, which is the ability to love our own bodies.

And it’s also just a great read. Armstrong’s an extremely gifted writer with a great knack for narrative. Solosexual reads a bit like a novel because Armstrong describes everything so vividly, with so much color and great imagery, and a talent for building suspense. He puts you right in the middle of the action. Even if his experiences are like nothing you’ve ever known before, by the end of the book you would swear you’d lived them too.

I started reading Solosexual online and immediately ordered two copies. I wanted one for myself and one to give to a friend. This stuff is too good not to share.

Armstong's manifesto makes a provocative and staunch defense of solosexualism, yet the text's repetitions and Armstrong's admissions of obsessive compulsive tendencies, often exhibited while he consumes alcohol, undercut the book's thesis. I applaud Armstrong's openness and bold confessional style; he does yeoman's work here, mapping a terrain of sexual identity few understand and far fewer are ready and willing to accept. Yet I feel it will be some time before solosexualism as an identity finds its true representative. I applaud Armstrong, nevertheless, for pulling back the curtain on a society of men who unapologetically embrace and defend the glories of masturbatory sex, and the fraternal kinship they have found with men across the globe who think and feel as they do.

An Honest, Awesome and Liberating Sexual Journey

I thought this book by Jason was not only very brave, but very honest and for me, very liberating.

I have always had questions and doubts about my own solosexual feelings and practice, and it was awesome to know that other people have the same questions and doubts, but that we are not alone in exploring and coming to terms with our solosexual nature as sexual men. I finished the book into two days, and a few days later started reading it again.

I hope that Jason will write more books on his journey as a solosexual man and help unite other such men, and thereby broaden the conversation around the world on the subject.

Thank you Jason for a honest, sexual and liberating book.
